Speaker: Christine Graf - President, RC Mijas International.
President Willem chaired the Meeting. He welcomed everyone and read the Invocation.
SAA Stephen announced the number present.
Pamela, speaking on behalf of Fellowship, announced that it was Christine’s birthday this month.
Myrjon visited RC Baarn Soest, in the South-East of Amsterdam when she was in the Netherlands and presented their flag to our Club.
The President’s Golf trophy, created by Ralph, was shown to Members and received much acclaim.
The Falling Down Sub-Club: Victor has fractured his left elbow (the things people do to avoid having to write the Minutes!) Not really as he is right-handed - IK. We hope he’ll be raising pints of Guinness again soon.
Peter has been made whole again and signed off the FDSC. There was no update on Charles, and a rumour that Martin was back in hospital again. The Club wishes everyone well.
Willem gave the floor to Christine Graf who commenced her talk. Due to lack of cable connectivity she had to be assisted by the strong arm of Jeanne holding up her laptop.
She encouraged us to partner with RC Mijas, a Belgian Club, and the Rotary Club of Benin, in applying for a Rotary Global Grant to assist with the work of ‘Share Africa’. This charity was created 40 years ago by their family as a memorial for a young Belgian couple who died in a plane crash.
This Charity assists in the Education and Medical Care of women especiall, teaching them how to grow better food to avoid family malnutrition.
The Grant will be used to pay for the drilling of six wells, since effective agriculture is not possible without water. The charity has the skills and expertise to obtain the government authorities permissions, locate the wells correctly, and maintain the well machinery after the wells are dug.
As an aside, Christine also mentioned that treatment of plastic garbage in the area was another problem to be discussed another time.
The Members present agreed to donate the 1,000 euro required for the Grant, but members must vote on our Website.
For your information, Benin used to be called Dahomey and is a small, french speaking African nation fronting the Gulf of Guinea. It is bounded to the East by Nigeria and Niger, with Togo and Burkina Faso to the West.
The meeting closed eight minutes late as Willem had apparently 'gone native.'
IK led our customary Toast to Rotary the World, Universe and Multiverse over!
