May 8, 2019

A couple of nice results yesterday, with three wins from three selections. Sasnovich was far too good for Schmiedlova to kick off the day, Wawrinka and Garcia got the job done for the double, and Ferrer was able to grind out a three set win as an underdog.

Onto today, where there are two plays that stand out. It has been a good couple of days, and I am a little bit wary about a number of matches today. Instead, I will settle for the two selections, take stock, have a bit of a rest tonight, and return tomorrow with more action.

Schwartzman vs Chardy (Approx 09:30pm AEST)

Since his loss to Fritz in Monte Carlo, where he looked devoid of confidence, the form of Schwartzman has really picked up. Off limited turnaround time, the need to go through qualifying in Barcelona looks to have helped Schwartzman in the long run, as since then his two losses have come to players who have gone on to win the respective tournaments (Thiem and Garin). Although he had a lapse in the second set against Cecchinato yesterday, his first and third sets were very solid, even if his opponent was a touch lacklustre. He has the type of game to really trouble Chardy today, so he is certainly a nice price to attack.

Jeremy Chardy was very lucky to scrape through his first round match against Ramos, which turned into a long three set match. It was only Chardy’s second win on clay for the year, with the first coming against an underdone Pablo Carreno Busta, returning from injury. Even then it was still a tight three set match, so he certainly isn’t setting the world on fire. He doesn’t appear to have that complete trust in his game that we saw in mid to late 2018, and I think the way Schwartzman is playing puts the Frenchman in a really difficult spot here. I am happy to make a 3 unit selection on Diego here to not only win, but cover the game handicap as well.

Bonzi vs Rola (Approx 07:00pm AEST)

Following on from the play on Bonzi to defeat Gonzalez, the Frenchman finds himself against a player transitioning across from a hardcourt tournament in America last week. Rola is fresh off a run on clay and hardcourt in Mexico. He claimed a title on hard 2 weeks ago and backed that up, reaching the quarter finals on hardcourt in the Puerto Vallarta Challenger tournament in Mexico last week, losing to Mirza Basic in 3 sets.

Bonzi, as I suggested the other day, is actually playing a lot better tennis than his recent form suggests. He isn’t afraid to match it with some of the bigger strikers on the Challenger tour, so I personally like that fact he is an underdog here against a player off a couple of full weeks in Mexico on hardcourt. Rola’s clay form this year has been poor, so the price for Bonzi is well worth a 2 unit selection in my opinion.
