March 26, 2019

A thoroughly disappointing day yesterday, with Daria Kasatkina putting in a dismal performance against Venus Williams after a high quality start. That was backed up by Nick Kyrgios putting together one of his best performances in recent time to defeat Dusan Lajovic. After a shaky start, where Lajovic was unable to convert some early chances, it was one way traffic for Kyrgios.

As mentioned above, it has been a highly disappointing couple of weeks, to which I am the first to admit. I haven’t felt any particular change in reads, however the two today struck a cord as they both lost quite convincingly. As a result, I will reduce staking a touch more on those subjective style of bets (i.e. we don’t know how injured Venus Williams is, and it’s hard to gauge Kyrgios’ motivation at times). Instead, I will focus on matchups where I can more confidently nail that edge, and look to improve heading into the clay season.

As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
Good Luck Today,

WTA Miami

Vondrousova vs Maria (Approx 10:00am AEDST)

I just get the feeling that based off the performances from Vondrousova this week, that she may just have a little too much firepower for Maria on a consistent basis today.

Whilst Maria was able to earn a shock win yesterday over the defending champion, there wasn’t a lot of fight coming from the other end of the court. Sloane Stephens put in another lethargic performance, and didn’t appear to have the patience to handle the variety that comes with facing Maria. Maria has been quite fortunate with her draw up to the fourth round, with wins over Schmiedlova, Giorgi, and a below-par Stephens is a nice draw for a slow hardcourt.

Marketa Vondrousova is a player that is quite comfortable on a slow hardcourt. She has shown over the last couple of years that she can match it with the better players on tour on the slower surfaces, and I think the speed of the surface does play into her hands in today’s match up far more than it does for Maria. The form of Vondrousova on slower surfaces, and her form over the last month in particular is proven, and I think she has the consistency and the ability to play with increased margin against Maria.  This match rests in the racquet of Vondrousova, as I don’t feel Maria will be able to consistently hit through Marketa, and in the form she is displaying, I am happy to make a 2.5 unit selection on Vondrousova at the -4.5 game handicap.
