NEED TO KNOW
A GAME OF CAT AND MOUSE

If you’re like us, you’ll have been hitting “refresh” on your browser like crazy while keeping up with the latest from the TCR. Originally a three-rider battle for supremacy, Bernd Paul scratched early on Thursday, leaving James Hayden to defend his title from race leader Björn Lenhard. Meanwhile, the rest of the field have fought tremendous inclines and searing heat to keep up. The race is far from over though -- for live updates and insight, we’ve got you covered. Also – you can now join the discussion and let us know your thoughts.

The latest from the TCR
THE COLORADO TRAIL RACE

Meanwhile, over in the Rockies, racers in this year’s Colorado Trail Race are experiencing equally challenging conditions. Topping out at 13,200 ft (over 4000m) altitude while racing 500 miles across Colorado, this year’s racers experienced some of the country’s most punishing singletrack and climbs, and impressive performances were capped by newcomer Timon Fish’s astounding run.

THE SILK ROAD MOUNTAIN RACE IS COMING

Most inaugural race events involve hastily arranged Facebook groups, fold-up tables nicked from the local school, and a last-minute flurry of texts to ensure that the organisers’ mates will actually show up. In total contrast, the Silk Road Mountain Race has attracted big names like Lee Craigie, Jay Petervary, and Björn Lenhard as well as an array of sponsors to its debut later this month. The 1,700km route through Kyrgyzstan is enough of a challenge without factoring the 26,000m of climbing and extreme remoteness -- read this interview with the founder to learn about the race’s origins, and what riders can expect.

DETOUR - WIN A TRIP TO RIDE THIS YEAR'S JAPANESE ODYSSEY

Like art, riding can be a tool for exploration and expression. The folks at Ritchey, 7Mesh and Apidura are looking for creative cyclists who can document their experiences of bike travel through any artistic medium -- be it visual, song, dance or written. What’s in it for you? They’ll send one winner to Tokyo to document their experience of The Japanese Odyssey, a 2,600km bikepacking journey in October 2018.

Riding China’s prettiest road in Xinjiang // When bonking and mental health overlap // How not to launch at Eurobike // Hero shots? Pricey. Winning a DH on a home-made Frankenbike? Priceless. // Wiggle High5 is no more // Apparently an “a la carte” subscription service is now a thing // Sure, that’s impressive, but can he juggle?  // Bike in the workshop? Try using your legs instead

Like hero shots? How about mid-TCR live streams and man buns? If the answer’s yes, then Stephane Ouaja’s account ticks all three boxes. A must-follow.

We all know the Transcontinental is brutal. But Torsten Frank’s candid and often funny commentary of his second TCR makes it look almost, well, fun.
