The Victoria Guitar Society is excited to present a Canadian premier of solo guitar and ensemble music of bohemian Rudolf Leberl. Classical guitarist Alexander Dunn, joined by Phillip Manning (violin), Guyonne Le Louarn (viola), Anna Cal (piano) and Anne Grimm (voice) offer a program of early 20th century Romanticism.

Rudolf Leberl (1884-1952) whose music belongs to the aesthetic family of Dvořák and Janáček, worked in the Czech Republic and Bavaria, producing over 1500 works for guitar which are only now receiving their due recognition. His entire output includes thirty large solo cycles for guitar as well as works for orchestra, strings, winds, piano and chamber music. Leberl suffered from the socio-political devastation following two World Wars. His works, which he had to abandon to escape oppression, were salvaged by his former students. Rudolf Leberl died in 1952 both destitute and blind. With a recent surge in interest in Leberl’s fine works, guitarists can now be nourished by his enchanting and delectable music.

Viewing options for this afternoon of fine music include the live venue with reduced capacity, contact-less entry, physical distancing and expectation of mask wearing when not seated or online streaming from the comfort of your home.  Vaccination proof may be required per health regulations on the day of the concert.

VGS has embarked on a project to promote the learning of classical guitar, particularly among younger music students.  This initiative originated from our concern about recent threats to music budgets in School District 61 and is supported by the Stober Family Foundation (based in Kelowna).

Still in the research stages, the project could take the form of placing instruments that are appropriate (size, quality) for new students in an existing collection or maintaining a local collection for use in new or existing music education programs, whether stand-alone or with public partners.  Stay tuned to see the evolution of this project.

Heather DeRome, a local classical guitar teacher, performer as well as a VGS member announces her latest CD TANZ and it includes work by JS Bach, Weiss, Frescobaldi, David Clenman and Dowland. Don't hesitate to check it out.

"I am sending this email to let you know that my new CD, TANZ, has finally been released. It includes the first violin Partita in B-minor as well as a selection of music from that same period. It also includes a minuet by David Clenman, my dear friend who passed away last November. My hope is to gradually record the whole book of Sonatas and Partitas and then release them all on a single CD, and this CD is the second in the series. It was many years in the workings, I had the help of some of the world's finest people, and I am very happy with the results! I feel very fortunate indeed.

The CDs will sell for $20USD each or, if you’d like to give them as gifts, they are 3/$50. Shipping is a flat rate of $5. Payment can be made through PayPal, and Canadians may pay in CAD via e-transfers. If you’d like to purchase one or a few, please reply to Heather DeRome at, and if you live in the Greater Victoria area, they can be delivered to your door."

The Board of Directors is seeking at least one new Director to line up for September at the latest.  If you are volunteer minded, have some time and take an interest in non-profit musical adventures, please consider joining the ranks at the Director level.  Our Directors are  "working" volunteers with voting privilege who share the administration and footwork by dividing projects into tasks according to our skill levels and time availability.

This self-nomination form is your first step, without obligation.
