Bringing Classical Liberalism to South London

New podcast from the Croydon Vote Leave gang, Brexiteers on Brexit, French radio, paper and Sputnik Radio interviews and what’s good online.

Happy New Year.  We hope you all had the best possible Christmas and New Year given the circumstances.  One piece of cheer from the festive period is we have now left the transition period and are properly no longer in the EU!

In our new Podcast we put the band back together, with the Croydon Vote Leave team of Dan, Mike, Chris Mendes and Duncan Forsyth.  We discuss the Post-Brexit Trade Deal with the EU and the latest Covid Lockdown. We then consider the planned May local elections and the latest developments in US politics.  In the run-up to independence Mike was interviewed for French radio station Europe 1 and newspaper Le Telegramme about the deal and how he would be celebrating us truly leaving the EU.

We asked, and you truly delivered! We asked a number of Brexiteers if they feel Brexit is now complete, for their hopes and their predictions for the future.  We had over 20 responses, published over 6 parts already.  Thanks to all who have responded.  We have a few more to publish and welcome more responses.

Sputnik Radio spoke with Mike about the latest lockdown and we’ve posted the audio.  Lasty we bring you a couple of items that have caught our attention from the web.

Brexiteers on Brexit
Now we have left the Transition Period, we asked Brexiteers if they feel Brexit is now complete, for their hopes and their predictions for the future.

Thanks to Dan Liddicott, John Broadfoot, Councillor Robert Ward, Ian Woodley, Jeremy Wraith, Peter Kirby, Ron West, Georgina Guillem, Crispin Williams, Friedrich Dominicus, Maureen Martin, Peter Sonnex, Councillor Mary Lawes, Phil Sheppard, Councillor Sandy Wallace, Josh L. Ascough, Mal McDermott, Yasmin Fitzpatrick, Dr Lee Jones, James Bradley, and Sean Finch.  We have more to publish soon.

Some answers below to read more following the series at Part 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

Did Brexit get done?

“our capacity to make decisions for ourselves as nations and regions has been gained and it’s cause for celebration.  Now we, the people, need to make it work for us“

“The 4½ year wait is miniscule in historic terms and will soon be forgotten. And what particularly pleases me is how Boris Johnson and his team have been able to claw back the amount of sovereignty they have from such a disastrous starting point bequeathed to them by Theresa May”

How do you hope the U.K. will use the new found freedoms?

“We should trade more with the growing economies, this will allow us reduce costs of basic foodstuffs, and other products for the poorest in our country, and through trade help grow the economies of developing nations spreading wealth and freedom to those most in need across the globe”

“Make improvements to trade agreement with the Commonwealth and other African countries especially. Change some foreign policy especially towards Israel and Iran and other Middle Eastern counties. Talks with Dublin to broker better relationship with them”

What constitutional reform would you like to see happen next?

“I would like to see is a new British Bill of Rights which sets out the right to Freedom of Expression, something that is paramount to the country flourishing as a democracy”

“For too long we have seen the rise and rise of the precautionary principle (better safe than sorry and just in case) with politically correct wokism stifling reasoned dissent and free speech”

What do you think is next for the EU?

“we are quite sure that the BREXIT was soon enough for GB to not get into an ever larger EU with more laws and much less freedom”

"Complete disintegration!”

Nous avons terminé le Brexit

Mike was interviewed by French radio station Europe 1 about the deal and how he would be celebrating us truly leaving the EU.  The broadcast (in French, with some of Mike's words audible) is available at https://www.europe1.fr/emissions/le-6-9/francois-clauss-avec-eric-coquerel-et-julie-neveux-4015705 starting at 01.38.20 .

“I have never been so tired… As a nation it will make us good to put this behind us.. coming back to more normality where we can disagree on policies, but not on fundamental structures… also if you listen to a football or gardening podcast Brexit will be mentioned. It has been relentless”

The interview also features in regional newspaper Le Telegramme, available at https://www.letelegramme.fr/monde/soir-de-fete-ou-de-deuil-un-reveillon-particulier-pour-les-pro-et-les-anti-brexit-30-12-2020-12682086.php.

“Early Brexit activist in his commune of Croydon, South London, Mike Swadling plans to toast on Thursday night… “With a glass of French champagne,” he says with a smile"

Mike would like to note his local Aldi had a good deal on French champagne!

What's online

We are in the third lockdown, having also suffered through many weeks of the Tier systems. 10 months into 3 weeks to ‘Save the NHS’, we need to ensure our civil liberties are returned.  Liberty 2019, allows you to see if your MP is committed to restoring in full our civil liberties as they were when they were elected to parliament in 2019.  This will be the next great battle and we need to pursue any who are not.  - Liberty 2019

The TaxPayers’ Alliance have taken a look at Public Health England and asked “What exactly has PHE been doing in the lead up to this, the largest public health crisis in a century and their moment to lead to the national effort? The answer, it seems, is that instead of focusing on the more important remit of planning and preparing for health emergencies, PHE has been the ultimate embodiment of the nanny state.”  Read more about the disaster this body has been - Public Health England: Their finest hour? - TaxPayers' Alliance .
