Disha Newsletter, April 2018

Disha would like thank each one of their sponsors and supporters who contributed to making Dishas ‘Cuppa for Kids’ Breakfast on Sunday 12th November 2017 such a huge success. We could not have asked for a better day to compliment the LOVE, ENERGY and GENEROSITY of each person who rolled out of bed to come along to the breakfast that morning.
Disha, a Melbourne based not for profit organisation was founded over 10 years ago by Tara Chandramouli. Tara's drive to create Disha came about when her brother, a loving and jovial member of the Indian community was diagnosed with Cancer. Supported by a group of her closest friends, together they had the vision to help make a difference, to reach out and touch the community by raising funds for worthwhile causes. Since then,  Disha with the humble support of its family and friends has raised more than $300,000 to support various causes mainly Cancer (of all types), as well as Mental Health.

To ensure Dishas flame continues for years to come, volunteers of Dishas next generation began planning for their first event  in August 2017 and set a goal to raise $15,000 for The Royal Children’s Hospital - Kookaburra Cancer Care Ward as part of the bed sponsorship program.  This ward is the only provider of complex children's cancer care and stem cell transplantation in Victoria and consists of a team of specialist medical, nursing, research and allied health professionals that provide care and services to meet the clinical, physical, social and psychological needs of patients and parents. The money raised at Dishas ‘Cuppa for Kids’ Breakfast has provided sponsorship for three years for one bed in the ward.
On Saturday 17th March Disha volunteers had the opportunity to visit the Cancer Day Clinic and Kookaburra Ward (Kids Cancer Care Unit). It was a quiet day in the hospital but words cannot describe what this World class facility is striving to provide...the BEST of everything-treatment, equipment, care, education, COMFORT and HOPE to every patient and family who needs to be associated with the place. Sometimes the stay for the kids and their families at the hospital can be months at a time, this is their home away from home, their classroom, their family room, their play room, their backyard.
It was an emotional morning at the hospital and Disha would like to extend thanks to Mary McGowan (RCH Community Liaison Manager) and Donna Aranyi (RCH Community Fundraising Manager) for the detailed eye-opening tour of the Kookaburra Cancer Care Ward and Day Clinic.
Disha’s donation of $15,000 to the bed sponsorship program in the Kookaburra Ward felt like a tiny splash in the mighty ocean, but we know that even if that small contribution can put a smile on a child’s face we have made a difference and we are so inspired to continue to do so. Thank you for supporting Disha and making this all possible.
Disha needs your support at their next event!
