Tualatin Forum Recap
by Kathleen Hersh

The League of Women Voters of Washington County invited State Representatives and Senators who represent the Tualatin area to a forum at the Tualatin Library to recap the 2019 legislative session Nov. 16th.
Three appeared including Rep. Rachel Prusak-D, Tualatin/West Linn; Rep. Margaret Doherty-D, Tigard/SW Portland and Rep. Courtney Neron-D, Sherwood/Tigard/Wilsonville/Aloha/Beaverton/Hillsboro/King City.  The panel was moderated by longtime League member Eric Schmidt, who prepared questions as well as took questions from the audience.
This was an interesting panel as Rep. Doherty is a veteran legislator and has served in the Oregon House for 10 years.  Rep. Neron and Prusak were both elected to the House in 2018 and the spring session was their first session. Rep. Doherty pointed out that Oregon has the third highest percentage of women in our legislature after Nevada and Colorado. She also noted that the House had passed more than 80% of their bills in this session with bi-partisan support.  All three noted that the House had run much more smoothly than the Senate.
Both Rep. Doherty and Neron have been teachers.  Rep. Prusak is a nurse practitioner. All three expressed satisfaction that the Student Success Bill passed. And all three feel that more needs to be done on surprise medical billing and high pharmaceutical costs.
Rep. Neron said that one thing she was surprised about in serving her first term was how much she learned about fish and how often fish needed to be considered in working on legislation.
A big thank you to members Jonella and Greg Malinowski for helping greet attendees at the event.
