Special Guest at Nov. Meeting

At our Nov. 11 meeting, we will be hearing from Steve Berger, Washington County Corrections Director and member of the Public Safety Coordinating Council.
Please note we'll meet at 3 p.m. instead of 1:30 p.m. and at Shute Park Library again, not the Beaverton Community Center.
Please read Kathleen Hersh's article recounting the Council meeting she attended and why we should be interested in the Council and its work coordinating local criminal justice and juvenile justice policy.
Voter turnout for the Nov. 5th election for Washington County was about 25 percent as of Wednesday morning, according to the Secretary of State's office. You can see results and breakdowns per measure here. Thank you to everyone who turned in their ballot, and helped us Get Out the Vote!
Census 2020
by Josephine Koehne

I have been going to Washington County Complete Count Committee meetings for Census 2020 with local community groups such as Adelante Mujeres, the Oregon Food Bank and others.
Census staff will be training librarians to set up volunteer resource centers to encourage “hard to count” populations around the state to participate in the once-in-ten-year count.
Rebecca Gladstone, president of the LWV Oregon, supports the idea of the League using our speakers bureau folks to attend these trainings and then to train League volunteers on getting the word out in the community.
There are ten simple questions on the survey, and none are on citizenship. This year, for the first time, the survey is offered online as well as by phone, by mail and in person. According to Title 13 of the US Code, only aggregate data will be stored. Personal name and address data will only be used to make sure no one is counted more than once.
The Census data is used in many ways, including determining how many representatives each state gets, redrawing district boundaries, planning for infrastructure and providing community services. Each year, the federal government distributes hundreds of billions of dollars to states and communities based on this information.
In you're interested in volunteering for this or learning more, please email josephine.koehne@gmail.com.

Congratulations to Washington County Unit leader and State Board Member Amelia Nestler and her husband David Nestler on the birth of their son, Frederick, on Oct. 10th! We wish the new parents all the best!
