Newsletter August 2019

Invest in ME Research is an independent UK charity campaigning for and facilitating biomedical research into myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME).
More details of the charity are here.

Welcome to our August newsletter.

The charity has announced plans for International ME Conference Week 2020 in London, UK.

This will be a special year in that we celebrate 10 years of international biomedical research Colloquiums and 15 years of international conferences.

Invest in ME Research is again organising a week full of events aimed at progressing research into ME.
The events again have events aimed at
  • enabling young and early career researchers to network
  • encouraging and facilitating international collaboration and sharing between researchers from around the world
  • allowing networking and presentation of research for a community of researchers, clinicians, healthcare staff, patients and carers
  • enabling more European patient group/charity collaboration to support biomedical research and clinical care initiatives formed by the European ME Alliance

Biomedical Research into ME Colloquium 9

The Invest in ME Research Biomedical Research into ME (BRMEC) Colloquiums are research meetings organised by the charity to encourage biomedical research into ME and international collaboration amongst researchers.
This has been one of the main objectives of the charity.
Our aim with the annual CPD-accredited research colloquiums has also been to introduce new researchers into the field of ME research, to gain new insights into the disease and enhance the strategy of research we are building.

IIMEC15 - 15th International ME Conference

The fifteenth annual public ME conference provides a unique opportunity for researchers, clinicans, healthcare professionals, patient group representatives, patients and carers to network and share information on ME.
The IiMER annual conferences and research colloquiums arranged by the charity attract presenters, researchers, physicians, patient groups and journalists from around the world

Thinking the Future 2020
Young/Early Career Researcher Conference

The Young/EarlyCareer Researchers conference is an initiative created by Invest in ME Research to encourage and support new and early career researchers to enter the field of ME.

Last year, working with National Institutes of Health, we were together able to stage two conferences - in Washington and in London.
We aim to continue to facilitate this network of young and new researcher who will develop research by bringing new ideas and energy into this research area.

Working with the NIH and European ME Alliance we want to establish a community of young research talent across Europe and beyond that will ensure we can continue developing the foundation of biomedical research into  ME that is required to find solutions to this disease.

Following updates to the web site we will also be releasing videos from some of our other conferences.

Clinical Trial Status at Centre

Discussions are ongoing in Norwich Research Park between parties involved in the FMT clinical trial -  the RESTORE-ME project that will determine the effectiveness of faecal microbiota transplantation as a treatment for ME as well as answer some important scientific questions.

IiMER have pledged half of the funds required, with the support of the Hendrie Foundation's pledge, and we are actively searching for the remaining funds.
Our fundraising page is here -

New PhD Studentship

Meanwhile we are funding a new PhD student who will be involved in parts of the scientific questions posed by the clinical trial. Working with UEA and Quadram Institute we hope this can begin in January 2020.
The advertisement for this will be published soon.

GP Fellowship Scheme

The advertisement for the new clinical fellowship specialising in ME in Norwich Research Park was published and interviews have taken place.
This exciting new opportunity for a GP in the first 5 years of general practice to undertake a GP fellowship is being created from a partnership between Quadram Institute and Invest in ME Research, working with the local CCG.
This position will allow skills and experience to be developed in ME and contribute to research & improved patient outcomes.
This initiative is an important part of the Centre of Excellence for ME by introducing education and training into the mix and beginning to build the foundations of modern clinical care for people with ME.

From Norway to Norwich - Literally
The first samples from the Tromso research lab have been received in Norwich.
This was ahead of the visit by Dr Peter Holger Johnsen.and Dr Linn Skjevling to Norwich.
The charity will also be arranging a public meeting in Norwich in the early autumn to publicise the research.

Linn and Peter held discussions with Professor Simon Carding, Professor Tom Wileman and PhD students Fiona Newberry and Katharine Seton, and IiMER were also present.

This collaboration will continue into the next years and Peter and Linn will be involved in the forthcoming European ME Research group meeting organised by the charity.

Thanks to Our Supporters

Thanks to everyone who has helped promote the work of the charity to raise awareness of ME and funds for biomedical research.

We captured some of the efforts being made throughout August here -
The European ME Alliance is presenting its work in a meeting in Stuttgart organised by EMEA Gemrnay member Fatigatio e.V. Details of work underway will be given and we hope to have this on the EMEA web site at a later date.
