Five Fishy Questions for NL Provincial Parties & Candidates
Towards a sustainable future for fisheries, coastal communities and the economy of Newfoundland and Labrador

Together, Fishing for Success, Too Big To Ignore and our Module I of Ocean Frontier Institute are asking ‘Five Fishy Questions’ to Provincial Parties and Candidates of Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) on the future of fisheries, coastal communities, and the economy of the province.

The aim is to initiate a public discussion on the challenges and opportunities for NL fisheries as an integral part of the province’s economy and heritage. We envision thriving coastal communities, with employment opportunities in the fishing industry as well as improved access to resources and markets ensuring the use of sustainable practices and food security to all. The initiative is also a call to action to all stakeholders and an invitation to our provincial policymakers to embrace our fisheries and work together to find ways to reconnect us to our past, revitalize our present and build our future for the generations to come.

Call for applications: Marine Institute's International Youth Internship Program (IYIP)
Apply by June 25, 2019, for overseas internships from October 2019-April 2020
The Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of the Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador provides young Canadian graduates with an opportunity to gain introductory work experience in countries throughout the globe through the International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC). This program has successfully launched the careers of many graduates by providing them with enhanced employability skills upon their return to Canada. In partnership with private, public and non-profit host organizations, MI is offering six-month overseas placements to interns working in a variety of fields. MI will be sending interns to Belize, Tanzania, Cambodia, Vietnam and the Philippines. The program covers many of the associated expenses, including round-trip return airfare between Canada and the host country, medical insurance, and entry visas. Participants will also receive a modest living allowance to offset basic living expenses (i.e. accommodations, food and local transportation). There will be 20 interns in each cohort. Between 2018 and 2021, MI is planning to send 5 cohorts overseas for a total of 100 internships. One of them could be you!
