Awards Season is Upon Us!

The Grammy’s, Oscars, Golden Globes all recognize the best of the best in movies, music and television. Most of these awards are given as a form of peer recognition. For example, the Oscars are voted by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In other words, awards are voted on by people within the industry. Actors, actresses, producers, directors all vote for awards in their particular field. They love patting each other on the back!

We  have the same opportunities to recognize our favourites in different areas within the business opportunity right here in our backyard. Through this we can promote our own community businesses which helps everyone. The annual Reader’s Choice Awards organized through the Arnprior Chronicle – Guide allows readers to vote for their favourites. This includes favourites in grocery stores, veterinarians, opticians, drywallers, gift baskets, snow removal, pool services, dentists and everything in between. What better way to find out who the customers feel is doing a really great job in any given service/ retail in Arnprior? The best form of advertising/ promotion is word of mouth and this is a fun opportunity to spread the love for your favourites in our community!

The Greater Arnprior Chamber of Commerce is coming upon its awards season and we at the Chamber couldn’t be more excited about it. Anyone can vote; you don’t have to be a member of the Chamber to participate. We want to know who you think is the best of the best in the following categories:

- Best Storefront (Physical and/or Digital)

I became an entrepreneur because I wanted to have a career that included my passion – dogs. I was lucky enough in 2001 to have the opportunity to open my first business and I thought I knew what I was doing.  Hindsight is 20/20!  I had no idea what I didn’t know. My learning curve was huge! Here are a few of the lessons I learned in the last 19 years through owning 3 businesses.

  1. Even if you are a small business, act like a big business. This will give a completely different impression to those wanting your services.
  2. Hire people how have skills in areas that you either aren’t good at, or don’t enjoy. This will allow those tasks to get done well and in a more timely manner (as you won’t be procrastinating) and will give you the time to focus on the things you enjoy and do best.
  3. Work ON your business, not IN it. This will take some time as usually when you open a business, you do everything. But as your business becomes successful, you need to focus on the bigger picture and hire others to be more hands on. If you don’t give yourself the time to work on the bigger picture, you’ll never have time to grow your business.
  4. Be innovative. Find your niche and competitive advantage and focus on those things. Don’t just copy the business down the road.  Be original. What makes you different?
  5. Take time for yourself.  You can’t work 18 hours a day, 7 days a week without eventually burning out. When you burn out, you are no good to anyone, especially your clients and staff. Make sure you carve out some personal time each day to enjoy family, friends and pets. It is important for your mental health.

As an entrepreneur, you must have a high risk tolerance, innovative mind, flexibility, and desire to succeed.  And you must never stop learning.
