Vol. 3 Issue 11

“Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his name” (Psalm 100:4).

We are now in the season of Thanksgiving! The words I continue to hear are, “Have an attitude of gratitude!” The short and sweet of this is, no matter what is going on in your life, keep your focus on God, know that Christ is with you, and the Spirit will lead your paths as you seek to glorify God. When we keep an attitude of gratitude it changes our whole perspective on life. We see things through the love God has for us and in turn God’s love in us is revealed to others. When we keep a good attitude, one that is optimistic, we can see beyond the trial or whatever battle we are facing in the present. The apostle Paul encourages us today and the Philippians of his time, “Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Phil 4:6-7).
The psalmist sings, “aloud a song of thanksgiving, and telling all your wondrous deeds” (Ps. 26:7). When we take the focus off ourselves and begin to praise God, focus on Jesus, it allows the Spirit’s transforming presence to minister to us and others. Proverbs 17:22 says, “A cheerful heart is a good medicine, but a downcast spirit dries up the bones. How might we keep our bones from drying up? How might we keep our heart singing with joy amid battles, temptations, and trials?
First, begin your day with a simple phrase, “Praise you, Lord! Thank you for the day ahead!”
Second, keep your focus on Jesus, “let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith,” (Heb. 12:2).
Third, keep a journal of things you are grateful for every day.
Fourth, show your appreciation for those around you and surround yourself with people who are like-minded, thankful!
Fifth, say a prayer every day as you give thanks to God for who you are and whose you are in Christ. Feel empowered with this understanding in all areas of your life.
Stay in the Word. Look up thankfulness, thanksgiving, gratitude, and other thankful phrases of scripture every day and meditate on them.
God loves a cheerful and thankful heart. When we have this attitude, we are giving God glory and we are displaying the wonders of God and the Spirit of Christ to all we meet each day. May the blessing of Christ infill you and empower you today and always! Happy Thanksgiving!

Grace & Peace,
Pastor Terry

Ministry Teams & Members

New!  Getting to know...
Marshall UMC Ushers:  Phil Harris & Gary Houk
When you attend Marshall UMC the first two faces you see are Phil Harris and Gary Houk.  They immediately make you feel welcome, and if you're anything like my family, rushing in a second before the service starts, they make you feel at ease and at peace.  They are also two of the best resources at church if you have a question about the service.  And Gary must give the best high fives as he's known among the kids as "the high five guy".

Take a moment to get to know two members of our church.

How long have you been attending Marshall UMC?
Phil:  35 plus years
Gary:  24 years

How long have you been serving as ushers?
Phil:  For 30 years
Gary:  About 8 years

What do you like best about serving in your role?
Phil & Gary:  Greeting new people and seeing the regulars.  Seeing the kids and watching them grow up.

What is your favorite memory of serving in your role?
Phil:  Every time I'me here I think of all of the people that have been through here and it's like they're still here.
Gary:  The cantatas, I enjoy the music and the UMW know how to cook!

Weekend LunchBox is back!
We will be delivering lunches for the weekend each week to 30-32 children at Coleman Elementary again this year. We are blessed for this opportunity to help some local families in need by providing some healthy items for lunch and breakfast through the 2018/19 school year. If you would like to help, we will be packing lunches each Sunday after worship in the Fellowship Hall (coffee provided!!).
You can also make donations in the weekly offering plate by writing Weekend Lunch on the Memo line of your check or envelope.
If you would like to assist with the Thursday deliveries, just let me know on Sunday after worship. We have a cart to help with the load and the school office is very friendly and very grateful. We will deliver all our lunches to WG Coleman Elementary on Zula road near Marshall Middle School. The Marshall Ruritans will be delivering the same to the children at C. Thompson Elementary.
