January 2019
Vol. 4 Issue 1
So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory” (Col. 3:1-4).
I love the New Year, new beginnings, and a time to reflect on the past, present, and future. I am a planner, and I love to seek the Lord as I open my brand new planner, all the pages are fresh and clean, waiting to be filled with appointments, to-do lists, daily action items, goals and the steps to get there. I love to write in different colors of ink and doodle as I discern God’s will in and beyond the norms of life, to dream and envision what God has for the churches and me.
When we wake up each morning, God gives us a fresh page in the chapters and stories of our lives. We find this promise in Lamentations, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (3:22-23). The promises of God fill us with hope, and his faithfulness empowers us to live each day seeking the things above. What goals are you setting for this New Year? What promises are you holding onto as you plan and set in place the steps to achieve these goals? What obstacles are keeping you from achieving your dreams and goals in the past? Obstacles come in many forms like fear, control, unforgiveness, offense, doubt, denial, and many other things that keep us from having a clean slate, a fresh start to achieve God’s desires for us.
I pray as you seek the Spirit, as Jesus speaks to you in your time of discernment and preparation for this New Year, God fills you with joy and enthusiasm. I pray God reminds you of his faithfulness, his new mercies, and his infinite love for you. I pray that if you experienced any offenses or discouragement in the past, you will be healed and forgive so that you can move forward in the goals and dreams God has for you. I pray we can offer a clean slate to others, love one another, and begin a fresh new page in the New Year.
Examination of our hearts and souls is always a good way to start and end each day and each year. However, we do not always do that. So, if you have some residual unforgiveness you’ve been carrying around for a while, ask God to help you to acknowledge it and to extend the grace he has freely given you to others. The flipside is, if you have offended anyone, make amends so that you and the other person can start new pages and new chapters.
Fresh starts are a blessing, and God offers this to each of us every day. So open your planners, smart phones, lap tops, or journals and take time today to reflect and examine what was great about last year and celebrate! Ask, “What kind of impact have I had for Jesus?” Who do I need to forgive or who do I need to make amends? What is God asking you to release and what is God asking you to embrace? Be the best possible you, you know, “the you” God created in his image to reflect the glory of his Son, Jesus Christ. May the God of abundant blessings and grace empower you, fulfill you, and renew you with his infinite love today and always. Happy New Year!
Grace & Peace,
Pastor Terry

Coming up at Marshall...
After many years of service, our beloved carillon (the outdoor amplified bell system) has died and cannot be repaired.  Our trustees have obtained pricing for new systems and the Finance Committee and Church Council have authorized establishing a fund to purchase a new unit, hopefully in 2019.  The selected carillon will cost around $7,000, with a discount given for trading in the old model.
The carillon really is a wonderful community outreach enhancement and is enjoyed and appreciated by so many people.   With its new, more user-friendly features it will be an even more important asset going forward.  Please consider a special gift to honor or memorialize loved ones, and designate your check as “Carillon Fund”.
UMW will have Super Bowl chili to take home after the February 3rd service, love offerings will be accepted.

Thought for the New Year
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.  It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.  We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?  Actually, who are you not to be?  You are a child of God.  Your playing small does not serve the world.  There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.  We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the Glory of God that is within us.  It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.  And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.  As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

Weekend LunchBox is back!
We will be delivering lunches for the weekend each week to 30-32 children at Coleman Elementary again this year. We are blessed for this opportunity to help some local families in need by providing some healthy items for lunch and breakfast through the 2018/19 school year. If you would like to help, we will be packing lunches each Sunday after worship in the Fellowship Hall (coffee provided!!).
You can also make donations in the weekly offering plate by writing Weekend Lunch on the Memo line of your check or envelope.
If you would like to assist with the Thursday deliveries, just let me know on Sunday after worship. We have a cart to help with the load and the school office is very friendly and very grateful. We will deliver all our lunches to WG Coleman Elementary on Zula road near Marshall Middle School. The Marshall Ruritans will be delivering the same to the children at C. Thompson Elementary.
