Poets Ledge

Hi <<First Name>>

Catskills Weather Outlook
The severe weather that has already engulfed the rest of the country — and much of Europe, too — is now upon us in the northeast. Temps will be severe and dangerous all weekend. Cooler temps are not set to arrive until Tuesday. If I hike this weekend, I’ll be assessing my feels every 10 minutes. Because, oof, it is medically nasty out there. (Upper elevations and summits will be cooler, of course, but getting there will require trudging through beastly heat on both ends of your hike. Please make smart choices for yourself this weekend.)

Testing: Bug Bite Thing
I’m currently testing this lightweight device: The Bug Bite Thing. Apparently, it works incredibly well. It uses simple suction to remove venom, saliva, and other irritants left under the skin by mosquitoes, bees, wasps, biting flies, no-see-ums, chiggers, sea lice, and more. Easy to carry. Clinically Proven. Kid friendly. 100% guarantee.

On sweaty days like these consider replacing lost electrolytes with Gatorade, Nuun, or whatever floats your boat.

Poets Ledge

A steep, rewarding hike. Beautiful woods. Incredible lookout.

This route to Poet’s Ledge on Kaaterskill High peak is very steep but very rewarding. This hike is generally described as moderate. However because of its length, and because of the fairly relentless elevation gain, I felt it was on the upper end of moderate. I would suggest thinking of this route as “hard-moderate”.

There are no easy hikes to Poet’s Ledge. It’s in a relatively remote location. But the reward for your effort is one of The Catskills’ most dramatic scenic views.

You will not be sorry you worked hard on this hike!

Hike Length: 6.5 miles (10.46 km)
Total Ascent: 2,200ft (671m)
Intensity: Moderate Catskills Hike

What I Use: Sawyer Permethrin Spray
Effective against mosquitoes, ticks, chiggers, and mites for up to 6 weeks! For use on clothing, tents, sleeping bags, and other outdoor gear, this repellent not only repels insects, it actually kills mosquitoes, ticks, chiggers, mites, and more than 55 other kinds of insects on contact. Odorless after drying, Permethrin will not stain or damage clothing, fabrics, plastics, finished surfaces, or any of your gear.

DEC Rescues & Actions

Town of Hunter | Greene County
Near Drowning: On May 30 at 10:40 a.m., Forest Rangers Dawson, Fox, and Mitchell responded to a report of a near drowning at Fawn's Leap in the Kaaterskill Wild Forest. The 25-year-old from New Jersey didn't know how to swim and misjudged the depth of the water. He went under and was unresponsive, but friends performed CPR and the man regained consciousness. Greene County paramedics stabilized the patient and Rangers helped package him in a litter to carry the subject up a roadway embankment using a rope belay. The patient was flown to Albany Medical Center.

Village of Catskill | Greene County
Wilderness Rescue: On June 9 at 5:40 p.m., Forest Rangers Fox and Gullen responded to a report of a 65-year-old hiker from Oneonta with an unstable leg injury on the Poet's Ledge Trail in Kaaterskill Wild Forest. Rangers found the subject approximately two miles up the trail and splinted his right knee. With the aid of crutches, the Rangers helped the hiker down the trail until they were met by Rangers Allwine and Dawson with a litter to carry the hiker out to their UTV. The group reached the trailhead at 11:53 p.m., and the hiker declined further medical attention.
