Highlights from the GSA network

It has been a busy 2021 so far. With the launch of the WHO NTD road map 2021-2030, World NTD Day and the new Global Strategy on WASH and NTDs, the GSA network has been busy supporting the work of the NTD community in this pivotal year. Here are the highlights of our work over the last three months - you can read further details, and more news and updates below.

GSA | Annual Report & Operational Strategy and the Advisory Board Summary

The GSA Advisory Board met virtually with the Executive Group on 1 March to review the GSA 2020 Annual Report and Operational Strategy for 2021. The Advisory Board congratulated the GSA on a successful year, undertaken during the difficult times caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and was impressed by the overall activity of the Alliance including the growth of new groups focusing on malacology, engineering and genital schistosomiasis. Workshop | Female Genital Schistosomiasis - deadline 9 April

As part of the FGS Accelerated Scale Together (FAST) package, Bridges to Development in partnership with the Geneva Learning Foundation invites applications for the Scholar Level 1 Workshop for Improved Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Female Genital Schistosomiasis (FGS).

Webinar | #ChooseToChallenge inequity in NTD research

Celebrating International Women's Day 2021, GSA, COR-NTD, SCI Foundation and ISNTD joined together to organise a panel discussion, looking at the importance of having women from Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) endemic countries working in, and leading, NTD research.

Article | A systematic literature review of schistosomiasis in urban and peri-urban settings

In light of rapid urbanization and the efforts to control morbidity and ultimately achieve elimination of schistosomiasis, it is important to deepen our understanding of the occurrence, prevalence, and transmission of schistosomiasis in urban and peri-urban settings. A systematic literature review published in PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases.

Announcement | WHO publishes the new NTD road map 2021-2030

Following an in-depth consultation, on 28 Jan 2021 the WHO has launched its road map for NTDs, entitled 'Ending the neglect to attain the Sustainable Development Goals: a road map for neglected tropical diseases 2021–2030'.

Webinar | Launch of the WHO Global Strategy on WASH and NTDs

Following the recent launch of the WHO Global Strategy on WASH and NTDs, the WHO held a webinar on 30 March for a thorough discussion on how to provide 100% access to basic water, sanitation & hygiene by 2030 in areas endemic for NTDs. The Strategy document on WASH and NTDs complements the recently launched new NTD road map and aligns with SDGs 6.1 and 6.2 on drinking water and sanitation.

Report | Developing an M&E framework for schistosomiasis

The COR-NTD virtual meeting was held in Nov 2020. The GSA coordinated the workshop on developing an M&E framework for schistosomiasis elimination. This report, entitled Developing a M&E framework for schistosomiasis and prioritizing operational research to achieve schistosomiasis elimination was shared with COR-NTD donors.

GSA | Commercially Available Diagnostics Tests for Schistosomiasis 

The Diagnostic Work Stream has gathered information on commercially available diagnostic tests for schistosomiasis. This is a working document that will be reviewed and updated as new diagnostics become available.

GSA | WASH Engineering survey

The GSA Engineering Working Group is collecting information on current practices in the design, development and installation of infrastructure with regards to the prevention of schistosomiasis transmission. We would like to hear from practitioners & engineers in the NTD, WASH and Water sectors who are working on designing and installing infrastructure.
