Welcome to issue #19 of The Digital HR Leader...

The dawn of Sunday 14th July 2019. Bastille Day in France. The promise of a glorious day of sport in the UK. As I contemplated the excitement to come, I had three wishes: England to win the Cricket World Cup, Federer to triumph over Djokovic at Wimbledon and Lewis Hamilton to take the chequered flag at Silverstone. Well as the execrable Meatloaf once warbled, two out of three ain’t bad

Diverse teams have better outcomes
It was the most tumultuous of days at Lord’s as England somehow managed to squeak past New Zealand
to win the Cricket World Cup by the tiniest of margins. In a riposte to the ignorant and narrow-minded forces of populism, it was refreshing to see that an England team led by an Irishman and with roots in New Zealand, Pakistan, Barbados and South Africa exemplified the power of diverse teams. More evidence that diverse teams perform better follows later.

Learning in the flow of life
Learning was rated as the top challenge in Deloitte’s 2019 Global Human Capital Trends study highlighting
three key trends: more integrated with work, more personal and heading towards a lifelong model. Vodafone is one of the companies leading the way in this shift, so do tune in to this week’s episode of the Digital HR Leaders podcast with Catalina Schveninger, Global Head of Learning at Vodafone.

A great article from Alicia Roach where she asks why so many organisations struggle with Strategic Workforce Planning. The thing about SWP is that yes, it is about the workforce – but that doesn’t mean it is another item in the “best-practice toolkit” or laundry list for HR. SWP defines that list in the first place! And not just for HR, but for the whole business, who are relying on the capabilities and skill of the workforce to deliver its transformation, digitisation or growth agendas.

If you want to understand the business case for diversity, look no further than this McKinsey study. The key headline is the strong correlation between diversity and company financial performance. The study is a treasure trove of information, and the advice offered (see FIG 2) on creating impact through diversity, which includes the use of analytics, is invaluable for HR and business leaders alike.
