Welcome to issue #3 of The Digital HR Leader...

Next week I’ll be walking the streets of Philadelphia to attend the Wharton People Analytics Conference on 4-5 April, which is always one of my highlights of the year as it provides a powerful combination of the best of people analytics together with outside-in learning from other fields. This week’s inspirational third-party reads include an article distilling the lessons HR can learn from marketing to help foster efforts to design, measure and improve employee experience. For too long the HR function has tended to look inward rather than outward and as a result has not realised the opportunity it has to help impact business strategy and outcomes as well as to make our workplaces better, fairer and more humane. Let’s change that, let’s make work better.

Last week I spoke on the Influencers stage at UNLEASH in London on how to create more impact with people analytics. The deck is available to download on Slideshare and includes data illustrating the rapid growth in adoption of people analytics, the Nine Dimensions for Excellence in People Analytics model I co-created with Jonathan Ferrar and a number of case studies highlighting how organisations have used people analytics to drive business outcomes and an improved employee experience.

Will the inexorable rise of technology render humans obsolete in the workplace or instead will the work humans do be continually reinvented? These are the two scenarios considered by the authors in this taster to their (highly recommended) book Reinventing Jobs. As the title hints, the authors consider the second scenario more likely and as this transformation takes hold, humans will actually become more valuable in ways that would not be possible without automation. The article provides frameworks designed to help leaders consider how work should be ‘deconstructed’.

Terrific article penned by McKinsey illustrating the shift in traditional thinking on learning and development in parallel with the advance of AI-enabled automation. The notion of “lifelong employability” is conceptualised as a way for organisations to get ahead of the skills challenge whilst inspiring workers to adapt, more routinely, to the evolving economy.
