Welcome to issue #3 of The Digital HR Leader...

Which is brought to you in collaboration with myHRfuture and features articles that have piqued my interest over the last seven days. I’m writing this week’s newsletter from Barcelona where as well as trying to persuade Lionel Messi to join Liverpool, I’ve been speaking at Leading with Talent Analytics.

The Streets of Philadelphia
Next week I’ll be walking the streets of Philadelphia to attend the Wharton People Analytics Conference on 4-5 April, which is always one of my highlights of the year as it provides a powerful combination of the best of people analytics together with outside-in learning from other fields. If you’re going to the conference and fancy a coffee, just drop me a line.

On the topic of outside-in inspiration…
This week’s inspirational third-party reads include an article distilling the lessons HR can learn from marketing to help foster efforts to design, measure and improve employee experience. For too long the HR function has tended to look inward rather than outward and as a result has not realised the opportunity it has to help impact business strategy and outcomes as well as to make our workplaces better, fairer and more humane. Let’s change that, let’s make work better.

How to create more impact with people analytics (my slides from UNLEASH)
Last week I spoke on the Influencers stage at UNLEASH in London on how to create more impact with people analytics. The deck is available to download on Slideshare and includes data illustrating the rapid growth in adoption of people analytics, the Nine Dimensions for Excellence in People Analytics model I co-created with Jonathan Ferrar and a number of case studies highlighting how organisations have used people analytics to drive business outcomes and an improved employee experience.

PAFOW is coming to London…
Finally, a reminder that PAFOW and Tucana have joined forces for PAFOW London on April 24th and 25th. I’ll be co-hosting with Al Adamsen and he and Barry have put together a formidable program and stellar line-up of speakers, which you can check out hereUse my code DG200 to get a £200 discount on tickets.

Until next time…

New content from myHRfuture!
I had the opportunity to speak to Arun Sundar and several senior HR leaders in Asia-Pacific on how “Social Capital” can be leveraged to enhance collaboration within organisations and consequently drive improvements in business performance and team cohesion as well as a better employee experience. The article covers applications of passive ONA and is the third-part of a series of articles focusing on people analytics in the Asia-Pacific region.

Jonathan Ferrar, Ian Bailie and I decided to conduct some research to help us better understand the skills and knowledge areas that HR professionals and their stakeholders consider to be critical to HR’s ability to adapt to a data-driven and digital age, and prepare their organisations for the future of work. The findings from our research have been published in our '2019 HR Skills of the Future' Report. As a valued subscriber of the Digital HR Leader newsletter we wanted to give you early access.

Content we're loving, this week...
Will the inexorable rise of technology render humans obsolete in the workplace or instead will the work humans do be continually reinvented? These are the two scenarios considered by the authors in this taster to their (highly recommended) book Reinventing Jobs. As the title hints, the authors consider the second scenario more likely and as this transformation takes hold, humans will actually become more valuable in ways that would not be possible without automation. The article provides frameworks designed to help leaders consider how work should be ‘deconstructed’.

Whilst companies have harnessed data to improve revenue, reduce costs and enhance customer experience, most have neglected to use this treasure trove of data for the benefit of the employee. As Hinssen passionately argues “Let’s change that. Let’s mine all the data that’s available and turn that into value, not just for the company, but for the individual employee”.

Terrific article penned by McKinsey illustrating the shift in traditional thinking on learning and development in parallel with the advance of AI-enabled automation. The notion of “lifelong employability” is conceptualised as a way for organisations to get ahead of the skills challenge whilst inspiring workers to adapt, more routinely, to the evolving economy.
