Research Opportunities Program (ROP) & Research Excursion Program (REP) Faculty Application Deadline

Reminder: All faculty applications for 2021–22 ROP and Summer 2021 REP courses must be submitted by Friday, January 15, 2021. ROP applications can be created or renewed via the CLNx platform. Visit the ROP website for instructions and support. Please note that the international travel cancellation has now been extended until August 31, 2021. See the University’s announcement for further details. Domestic REP proposals will still be reviewed. Applications can be found on the REP website. Please contact Christine Ovcaric with any questions.

Teaching & Learning Community of Practice Session

Join us for “Enhancing Student Academic Learning with Departmental Multi-Year Learning Communities,” and hear from professors in the Department of Cell & Systems Biology as they talk about the structure and success of their three-year learning community, which encourages undergraduate research and professional development. They will also outline how community building initiatives can strengthen the overall learning experience for students.

Mitacs — Canadian Science Policy Fellowships

Help solve public policy challenges in Canada. The Mitacs Canadian Science Policy Fellowship is now accepting applications from prospective fellows interested in undertaking a year-long policy position with a Canadian government host office beginning September 2021. The Mitacs Canadian Science Policy Fellowship offers PhD holders from all disciplines a 12-month immersion into the policy making process with participating government departments.

Connaught Global Challenge Research Program: A&S Proposal Development Support

Proposal development and editorial support is available to any A&S faculty members interested in applying for the 2021–22 Global Challenge research grant.

The Global Challenge competition is open to all U of T full-time research faculty, with grants up to $250,000 each (up to four proposals normally funded), plus an additional $150,000 available through a new supplementary stream, the Connaught Global Research Impact Program (C-GRIP) to Global Challenge teams for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. 2021 SSHRC Partnership Engage Grant and Partnership Development Grant — Information Webinar

The SSHRC Partnership Engage Grant and Partnership Development Grant information webinar is for faculty researchers interested in funding for a partnered research project. Virginia Maclaren, Acting Vice-Dean, Academic Planning and associate professor in the Department of Geography & Planning will share valuable information drawn from her experience as a three-time SSHRC PEG Merit Review Committee adjudicator. This event is open to researchers in the Faculty of Arts & Science.

Director Search for the Elahe Omidyar Mir-Djalali Institute of Iranian Studies — Committee Membership and Call for Nominations

An Advisory Search Committee has been appointed to recommend a Director of the Elahe Omidyar Mir-Djalali Institute of Iranian Studies. The input of faculty, staff and students is critical for the success of the selection process. Nominations for the Director should be sent by January 25, 2021 via IIS Director Search Nominations. Questions regarding the Director search should be directed to Christine Yarish.

Data Sciences Initiative Workshops

The Data Sciences Initiative Workshops will take place over two afternoons on January 22 and January 29. Attendees are requested to register for both dates. The workshops will bring together University of Toronto researchers from diverse areas to develop an institutional strategic initiative in data sciences. In particular, the workshops will focus on current and potential future research opportunities for core data sciences and applied fields. Register by January 15, 2021.

Advisory Committee on the Appointment of a Vice-President, International

A position profile developed by the Advisory Committee on the Appointment of a Vice-President, International is now available. The Advisory Committee welcomes nominations and applications for the Vice-President, International and will begin its consideration of individuals immediately. Nominations are due January 18, 2021.

Announcement of the University of Toronto Press External Review

An external review team for the University of Toronto Press (UTP) has been established and will be meeting with UTP stakeholders in February 2021. The review report will be presented to governance and made broadly available to stakeholders. Comments and suggestions on the review are welcome.

Reminder: Call for Nominations for the President’s Teaching Award

A reminder that nominations for the President's Teaching Award (PTA) are ongoing. The PTA is the highest honour for teaching at the University of Toronto. This award is open to tenure stream, teaching stream and clinical faculty members. The deadline is March 15, 2021.

Call for Proposals — Teaching and Learning Symposium 2021

This year's online symposium is co-hosted by the Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation and the Desautels Centre for Integrative Thinking from May 12 to 14. The submission deadline for proposals is February 22, 2021.

Arts & Science provides all staff, faculty, graduate students and postdocs with access to opportunities to learn about mental health resources, promote a culture of caring and develop strategies for supporting personal well-being. As you plan for the new term, consider registering for a workshop or requesting one for your team from the A&S Mental Health Programs Officer.

Insulin: Celebrating a Century of Discovery

The University is hosting a variety of celebrations to commemorate what Sir Frederick Banting called "Toronto's gift to the world" — insulin. The discovery of insulin at U of T 100 years ago is one of the most significant advances in the history of medicine.
