Dean Woodin Highlights Accomplishments of the A&S Community in 2020

As 2020 comes to an end, we take a look back at the year to recognize the contributions of our students, faculty, staff and alumni. Chair Search for the Department of Mathematics — Committee Membership and Call for Nominations

An Advisory Search Committee has been appointed to recommend a Chair of the Department of Mathematics. The input of faculty, staff and students is critical for the success of the selection process. Nominations for the Chair are due December 22, 2020 and can be submitted via the MAT Chair Search — Nomination Form. Research Opportunities Program (ROP) Faculty & Staff Info Session

A reminder that all ROP submissions for Summer 2021 and Fall/Winter 2021–22 are due January 15, 2021. ROPs give faculty from across Arts & Science the chance to engage second- and third-year undergraduate students in their research projects. A&S faculty may receive between $750–$2,000 in research stipends to support their project. To learn about the ROP and its benefits, and to receive a quick tutorial on how to submit an application through the new electronic form, please join us Tuesday, January 5, 2021 from 2–2:30 pm via Zoom. A meeting link will be sent to you after registering.

Proposal Development and Editorial Support: SSHRC Insight Development Grant (IDG)

A&S faculty members applying for a SSHRC IDG in the February 2021 competition should contact Funded Research Officer, Suzanne Jaeger at their earliest convenience. Suzanne is available to provide proposal development support and editorial review.

IDG program deadlines:

  • Internal Review deadline (extended): January 20, 2021
  • U of T MRA deadline: January 25, 2021, 9 am
  • U of T SSHRC online submission deadline: January 29, 2021, 9 am
  • SSHRC deadline: February 2, 2021

Experiential Learning Survey & Resources

The Office of the Vice-Provost, Innovations in Undergraduate Education (VPIUE) is seeking input on institutional experiential learning supports and resources. Your input and feedback are vital in helping drive experiential learning at the University. Faculty and staff leading or supporting experiential learning activities or programs are encouraged to complete the survey as soon as possible.

New resources for remote and virtual experiential learning opportunities have now been uploaded to the institutional Experiential Learning Hub's Remote Experiential Learning Resources page. Faculty and staff can find supports and resources for designing, assessing, supporting and facilitating experiential learning in a remote context both during and after COVID-19. The FAQs have also been updated with COVID-19 related questions.

Faculty or academic units seeking guidance on or assistance with existing or new experiential learning opportunities are encouraged to reach out to the Faculty of Arts & Science Experiential Learning & Outreach Support office at

Supporting Employees in All Dimensions of Well-Being

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, many faculty members, librarians and staff are experiencing stress, isolation and challenges in balancing their family responsibilities while working from home, all of which are being exacerbated leading up to the holidays. Deans, Chairs, Directors and managers are encouraged to learn more about some of the emotional wellness resources that are available to employees at the University.

Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy — Interim Director Appointment

Professor Cheryl Misak has been appointed Interim Director of the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy effective December 15, 2020. Professor Misak brings a wealth of administrative expertise to the role, having served as Chair of the Department of Philosophy, Acting Director of the Institute for the History & Philosophy of Science & Technology, Dean of UTM, Acting Vice-President and Principal of UTM, as well as Deputy Provost, Interim Provost and Vice-President and Provost of the University.

Announcing Four Key Advisory Roles in the Office of the Vice-President, International

Professor Ashley Stirling has recently been appointed as Special Advisor to the Interim Vice-President, International. Professors Obidimma Ezezika, Elham Marzi and Barbara Murck have recently been appointed as the Office of the Vice-President, International's tri-campus Advisors on Global Classrooms.

Manchester Calling: Funding Available for Joint Projects in 2021

U of T and the University of Manchester are each contributing funds to support collaborative research projects in 2021. The aim of the fund is to provide initial support for the development of research links and catalyze further collaboration. There is wide scope in terms of topics with up to $8,500 available for 10 U of T projects. The application deadline is January 18, 2021.
