New Uploads for May 2021 and new services to make The Map Archive even more accessible
This May we're launching a series of highly detailed maps on Central Europe during the Napoleonic era and we're continuing to upload maps on the history of Christianity; our Christianity collection is growing steadily to become an unrivalled resource. In addition we have introduced new utilities for site users: Bespoke Map Services and Teaching Resources.
Central Europe 1806
We have begun uploading our new series of complex maps of Central Europe and so far maps of 1797, 1806 and 1810 are available on the site. This map shows the situation in 1806 when, after ten years of diplomatic wooing, 16 German client states agreed to join the Confederation of the Rhine, with Napoleon Bonaparte as 'Protector of the Confederation'. Napoleon further consolidated his control of the Confederation by marrying his relatives into the Baden and Bavarian royal families.
We have now uploaded a series of maps that chronicle the tempestuous period of the 15th and 16th centuries in Europe. The advent of printing with movable type, which dates to the printing of Gutenberg's Bible in Mainz in 1453, galvanized Europe, facilitaing the spread of new ideas and resources, launching the Renaissance in Italy and ultimately playing a major role in the Reformation. Martin Luther launched the Reformation in Wittenberg, Germany, in 1517 and soon protracted religious wars broke out between Protestant and Catholic leagues. The Peace of Augsburg (1555) created the legal conditions for Protestants and Catholics to co-exist.
Out latest innovation on the site is available for subscribers only. We have put together 10 extended articles on a range of subjects, with maps, that will be indispensable as a teaching resource.
