The Senate stripped down crucial elements out of the original COVID relief bill, which is a frustrating missed opportunity, but this crisis demands we get this bill across the finish line. The timing and outcome of this vote is too important -- unless a COVID-19 relief package passes before the March 14 deadline, 11.4 million Americans will lose their benefits.
READ HERE a comprehensive list of what is in this bill and share the infographic above from Center for American Progress Action Fund.
House Democrats must work quickly and fight to provide the most robust, inclusive aid package possible. There’s no time to waste -- call your representative and ask them to pass the American Rescue Plan quickly.
Last week, the FDA finally approved the University of Illinois’ SHIELD saliva test for COVID! On our January meeting, Beth Heller from the SHIELD team stopped by to talk to us about this groundbreaking test. Watch it below! And learn more at uillinois.edu/shield.

H.R. 1 -- the For the People Act -- officially passed the House! Now it's in the hands of the Senate. 67% of Americans from across the political spectrum support the For the People Act, which expands voting rights, stops the flow of big money into our elections, and a lot more.
But it could very well fail in the Senate.
The problem? Democratic senators who'd rather collaborate with Mitch McConnell and protect the Jim Crow filibuster than move forward legislation that they themselves support. We need the For the People Act and we can’t let Democrats be the reason it fails.
HERE is a quick overview of what is in the bill or take a deeper dive and READ HERE a breakdown section by section.
So we are asking YOU to email and/or call Senators Duckworth and Durbin! Here is a draft letter, feel free to edit and add your thoughts!
Dear Senator (insert name),
My name is ___ and as your constituent, I am writing to you today to thank you for your actions regarding COVID relief and for standing up for our Democracy after the events of January 6th. I hope you and your staff are doing well and know people appreciate the work you do on our behalf.
I also would like to take this opportunity to ask you to defend our democracy and fight to pass bold, structural reform changes. This includes:
S. 1 (the For the People Act), to get money out of politics, expand voting rights, combat corruption, secure our elections, and more;
S. 51, to make DC the 51st state to bring balance to the Senate and make Congress more responsive to the needs of a diversifying electorate;
John Lewis Voting Rights Act
and to eliminate the filibuster, an arcane “Jim Crow relic” that’s time has come.
Do you get frustrated when you see lies and misinformation on social media? Then join Indivisible in the fight against big lies with the Truth Brigade! Here are the current campaigns:
National Campaign: The Big Lie is Back
Many Republicans, including the former Liar-in-Chief, are back at it: spewing the same false claims about the integrity of our election that led to the Jan. 6 attack on America. So let's make sure we are sharing on social media and to our networks the truth. Read more HERE. This is a sample message, feel free to post it or customize it:
Most of us want our leaders to focus on OUR health and safety--not on fear for their own lives. Yet extremists on the right are inciting the insurrectionists again, spreading the Big Lie to disrupt our democracy. I love my country, and I'm not falling for it. #TruthBrigade https://bit.ly/37I5okY
State Campaign: COVID Vaccination
Let's debunk the fears and lies about COVID vaccination and share the truth. Read more HERE. This is a sample message, feel free to post it or customize it:
A COVID vaccine is here! But some people are choosing to spread lies that will only prolong this pandemic. Instead of listening to rumors, I hope we come together to listen to the science and support safe, effective vaccines for all. #TruthBrigadeIllinois https://www.bbc.com/news/54893437
Here’s a look at what Indivisible is prioritizing in the coming months:
D.C. has a population of almost 700,000 (more than Wyoming or Vermont), and it represents an increasingly diversifying electorate nationwide (if D.C. were a state, it’d be the only majority-minority state in the country). None of those people have voting representation in the House or Senate. The way the Senate was designed caters to the shrinking conservative base, and it’s time to expand representation to reflect the true needs of the people.
Join Indivisibles across the Midwest to learn about the racist history that has disenfranchised thousands of D.C. residents for years, and what we can do to counteract this structural bias. RSVP HERE
Eliminating the filibuster, a relic of the Jim Crow era that’s been used for decades to slow progress and prevent racial justice initiatives and other progressive priorities. With the filibuster in his pocket, Mitch McConnell can run the show even when his party is in the minority. We have to prove him wrong.
With rampant voter suppression targeting voters of color, immigrants, and poor communities across the country, enshrining and expanding the right to participate in our democracy has become more and more urgent. Congress must pass H.R. 4 (the John Lewis Voting Rights Act).
Every single issue we care about comes down to the courts. Republicans understand how important the courts are for protecting conservative interests, and also how important they can be in blocking progress.
To unrig our courts, we need to pass bold, structural reform in these four areas: Supreme Court expansion, expansion of the lower federal courts, term limits for Supreme Court justices, and improved ethics and transparency requirements
H.R. 1/S. 1 (For the People Act) has passed in the House to expand Americans' access to the ballot box, reduce the influence of big money in politics, strengthen ethics rules for public servants, and implement other anti-corruption measures for the purpose of fortifying our democracy, and much more.
