Send Senators Valentines…for Democracy!
Roses are Red
The Senate is Blue
Protect our Democracy
We’re counting on you!
We won back the House, the Presidency, and the Senate. Now, it's time to really get to work!
#1 on our agenda: fixing democracy. We must end Republican voter suppression, gerrymandering, and election-buying. These are anti-democratic tactics that subvert the will of the majority of Americans.
Senators Durbin and Duckworth need to know that we expect them to lead the fight to pass voting rights legislation (including HR 1 and HR 4) and D.C. Statehood by whatever means are needed. This includes eliminating the filibuster by which a minority of red-state Senators are able to block action on urgent priorities like democracy reform.
Help us get this message across to Senators Durbin and Duckworth by sending them a Valentine demanding they stand up for democracy, by whatever means necessary including abolishing the filibuster if needed.
Indivisible Chicago will collect names and addresses, print valentines with each person's name, address (to prove you are a constituent), and personal message, and hand-deliver one to each Senator.
Culturally Responsive Teaching and
From time to time, standards for becoming teachers in the state of Illinois are up for review and new criteria is implemented and adopted by college programs often. The current set of proposed Culturally Responsive Teaching Standards are intended to help teachers in training to have full awareness and therefore respect for all of their students.
The letter of support below gives a good description and includes a link to the actual standards. Below, you can also read through a joint statement made by the two state professional educator associations.
If you are comfortable with these statements, please sign the letter as an individual before the February 10 deadline.

Call Sen Durbin and Sen Duckworth
Just a few weeks ago on Jan. 6, people around the world watched in horror as thousands of Trump supporters enacted a coordinated, deadly attack on the Capitol in an attempt to take power and overturn the election. Fueled by months of GOP lies and conspiracies, the insurrectionists were set ablaze by Trump’s incendiary rhetoric earlier that day.
Any elected official who stokes violence and division and tells repeated lies to subvert our democracy is unfit to represent us, and that’s why we must ensure that Trump is held accountable for his actions.
Based on statements, we expect Senator Durbin and Senator Duckworth to vote to convict. Nevertheless, let's call them now and urge them to vote to convict Donald Trump and then disqualify him from holding federal office in the future.
There are a lot of questions and confusion surrounding the bill recently passed in Illinois. We recommend reading more about the bill in this article by NBC Chicago and The Guardian.
We also had a wonderful presentation about the bill during the Indivisible Illinois meeting and we highly recommend watching the recording HERE.
Then contact J.B. Pritzker and tell him to sign this bill NOW!
Here’s a look at what Indivisible is prioritizing in the coming months:
Eliminating the filibuster, a relic of the Jim Crow era that’s been used for decades to slow progress and prevent racial justice initiatives and other progressive priorities. With the filibuster in his pocket, Mitch McConnell can run the show even when his party is in the minority. We have to prove him wrong.
With rampant voter suppression targeting voters of color, immigrants, and poor communities across the country, enshrining and expanding the right to participate in our democracy has become more and more urgent. Congress must pass H.R. 4 (the John Lewis Voting Rights Act).
D.C. has a population of almost 700,000 (more than Wyoming or Vermont), and it represents an increasingly diversifying electorate nationwide (if D.C. were a state, it’d be the only majority-minority state in the country). None of those people have voting representation in the House or Senate. The way the Senate was designed caters to the shrinking conservative base, and it’s time to expand representation to reflect the true needs of the people.
Every single issue we care about comes down to the courts. Republicans understand how important the courts are for protecting conservative interests, and also how important they can be in blocking progress.
To unrig our courts, we need to pass bold, structural reform in these four areas: Supreme Court expansion, expansion of the lower federal courts, term limits for Supreme Court justices, and improved ethics and transparency requirements
H.R. 1 (For the People Act) has been reintroduced to expand Americans' access to the ballot box, reduce the influence of big money in politics, strengthen ethics rules for public servants, and implement other anti-corruption measures for the purpose of fortifying our democracy, and much more.
There will be more action steps in the coming weeks, but for now, we are asking you to:
Send a Valentine through Indivisible Chicago
Call your Representative in Congress and ask for their commitment to voting YES for HR1, HR4, and HR51.
