Take root among the stars!

Welcome to University City Public Library's 2020 Big Book Challenge! This is the email newsletter for the Earthseed path: Parable of the Sower (our June read) and Parable of the Talents (our July read) by Octavia Butler. As you may have already discovered, we are taking our Big Book Challenge completely online this year for the first time ever. We may still have a few details to tweak, but be sure to RSVP ( to make sure you get all the Earthseed-specific emails. Our Adult Summer Reading blog will also have updates as we continue to fine-tune the program. Be sure to check out our Earthseed Reading Guide and the FAQs post if you want to get a better idea about the program and this series.

As with many other things in the world right now, the arrival of our physical copies of the books has been delayed. If you have a University City Public Library card (or another card to a library in the Municipal Library Consortium) and would like us to reserve one or both books for you, please click here to fill out this Google Form so that we may reserve the books for you when they arrive. These books are available in digital formats as well on our other platforms.

Parable of the Sower: Parable of the Talents: Parable of the Sower/Parable of the Talents 2-in-1: If you belong to a different library system, please check with them to find out the availability of these books. They are considered modern classics, so hopefully they will be available to you in some format.

We are also excited to welcome Dr. Samantha Pergadia and Dr. Rebecca Wanzo as our featured guests to provide additional insight to these texts. You will be able to watch a prerecorded presentation from each presenter in the weeks leading up to our discussions. We will then host a live Q&A on Zoom with each presenter at the end of the month, followed by an alternate Zoom book discussion date for those unable to attend the discussion with the presenter. If you cannot attend the live Q&A session but still have questions for the presenter, you will be able to email your question(s) ahead of time to us, and then the live event will be recorded for you to review at your convenience. Of course, you are welcome to join all events if you are able.

June (Parable of the Sower):
  • June 29 at 7 p.m.: Live Q&A with Dr. Pergadia
  • July 1 at 3 p.m.: Book discussion
July (Parable of the Talents):
  • July 27 at 7 p.m.: Live Q&A with Dr. Wanzo
  • July 29 at 3 p.m.: Book discussion

Thank you for your interest in the Earthseed path of this year's Big Book Challenge! Please stay tuned as we finalize our reading adventure!
