  Issue no.2

It was good to hear Rishi Sunak’s announcement about his Plan for Jobs which is going to be essential as a starting point for many young people. Now the government has a broad plan, I will be interested to see how it is fleshed out and becomes a reality for the thousands of school leavers who will be undoubtedly concerned about their futures and may not be sure what their next steps will be.
In a nutshell, the government plans to introduce a new Kickstart Scheme in Great Britain, to create ‘hundreds of thousands of high quality’ 6 month work placements ( 25 hours a week at minimum wage) for those aged 16-24 who are on Universal Credit and are deemed to be at risk of long-term unemployment.

They plan to improve availability and expand eligibility for traineeships for those with Level 3 or lower qualifications and who are aged 16-24 years. From from 1st August 2020 to 31st January 2021, the government will incentivise employers to encourage new apprenticeship hiring for anyone under 25, These payments will be in addition to the existing £1,000 payment the government already gives employers for new 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged under 25 with an Education, Health and Care Plan.

They will also provide £101 million for the 2020-21 academic year to give all 18-19 year olds in England the opportunity to study targeted high-value Level 2 and 3 courses when there are no employment opportunities available to them.

This is a lot to put in place quickly and I see this happening at a much slower pace than the government anticipates. Some say it is tokenistic and employers will be slow to react to the incentives, but I shall be eagerly ‘watching this space’!

  • Widen your search to include London if you are happy to commute – you will find a lot more opportunities to be had.
  • Check out Indeed.co.uk - currently there are 16 new opportunities within 15 miles of Tunbridge posted within the last 2 weeks. Set up an alert for trainee apprenticeships on their site to get the latest information.
  • Remember, for most of these opportunities the employer will accept your predicted grades on your application so don’t be put off applying because they are asking for qualifications – they understand you are waiting on results.
  • If you can’t find anything in the field of work you are interested in, then be brave and contact some of the organisations you would like to work for to ask if they would be willing to take on an apprentice and ask for a chance to pop in to meet them.
  • Not all apprenticeships are posted on the government website notgoingtouni.co.uk is also an excellent place to look:

  • Sometimes you’ll go to the employer website only to find the job closing date has passed. This is sometimes because job websites pick them up late in the process. However, there is often a note underneath that goes something like this......
We’re always on the lookout for talented enthusiastic people to join our team. So, ask yourself do you have what it takes to be a.........?
Get in touch and send us an email / CV /portfolio!
Most people won’t bother but this is worth doing because a company's recruitment needs are changing constantly, and they may have had applicants drop out of the recruitment process or something new is in the pipeline that hasn’t been advertised yet! Crucially, it shows you could be bothered!

Treat this as if you were applying for a job – personalise your application to fit the culture, skills and competencies they may be looking for and tell them why you are interested in their business!
