November 2019 Newsletter

A Letter from your 2nd Vice Regent:

Hi guys!
First of all, thank you so much to everyone who attend last month's field trip to Vermont! We had so much fun, despite the monument being closed. I really do appreciate everyone rolling with the punches. It was a ton of fun being able to parade you all around my beautiful town.
November is looking to be an exciting month, with the Hudson's Veteran's Day Parade and the Luncheon to honor President General Denise Doring VanBuren falling just a  few days apart. Although I will not be at either event, I hope both are well attended. Details are below.
In our member spotlight section for the month we are meeting Catherine Burke - or Kate for short. I've also included a picture of beautiful Pittsburgh, as that is where Kate lives.
Lastly, I wanted to thank you all for the positive comments on the start of this newsletter. It's a ton of fun for me to put together, and a wonderful way for us all to be connected - no matter where we live. If you are (or know of) a member who lives somewhere that's not New York, give me a shout! I'd love to feature them in newsletters to come.
Alright, well that's it for this month! Oh, and don't forget - our November meeting is on the 18th! We will be presenting our Community Service Award - keep an eye out on Facebook (or IMBY or the paper or our website) for details!

-Katie West, 2nd Vice Regent

Member Spotlight:

Catherine Burke, or Kate, grew up in Virginia, but traveled to Hudson every summer to visit her mother’s family. As a child her grandfather Overbaugh would tell her all of the family folklore, including that she had ancestors who fought in the American Revolution. It wasn’t until decades - and lots of genealogical work - later that she found out that she in fact had several Overbaugh ancestors who fought in the Revolution.

Kate joined the DAR, specifically choosing our Hudson chapter, in honor of her beloved grandfather.

Kate currently lives in Pittsburgh. She is a retired psychotherapist. She has long been a supporter of women’s rights, working at a feminist psychotherapy center. Now, she is an advocate for human rights and is a member of Amnesty International. She is also an environmental activist.

Kate enjoys traveling and recently returned from a trip to France, Italy, and Spain. She hopes to take her travels to Hudson in the spring.
