Welcome to our October newsletter: We've given the newsletter a minor makeover for this edition. We hope you like the new design and layout.
This month we have lots of upcoming activities for you to enjoy. These include a number of celebration events linked to International Day of Older Persons on 1st October. We have worked closely with Calderdale Council to promote and allocate funding for these events and received some great applications from local older people's organisations. We're now excited to see the events they have got planned.
We've also got some up-to-date health news, including details of the booster jab programme in Calderdale this autumn, whilst we continue to build up the bank of information, news and tips for those of you looking to keep you cost of living budget under control this winter.

EVENTS: International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) Events In Calderdale
IDOP is an annual celebration day observed on 1st October. Working with Calderdale Council we have been able to allocate grant funding to local older-people's community groups to come together and celebrate this important date during the month of October.
As a result, a number of local groups in Calderdale will now mark the occasion with a special event or party during October. Amongst the organisations running events are Annapura Indian Dance, Age Concern Todmorden, Memory Lane and Daisy Chain Dementia Cafes, the Young at heart Group at the Shay Stadium, Southowram Older People’s Association (SOFA) and the Past Times at the Archway Project - Full details of all the events are on our website.
ACTIVITIES: Why Not Volunteer This Autumn?
We've just received a new list of volunteering opportunities in Calderdale, compiled by the VSI Alliance – they include work at local museums, vaccine support work, plus roles involving gardening and volunteering. Read more about them on our website.
EVENTS: Information Fair at Todmorden Town Hall: 14th October
This fair organised by Calder Valley MP Craig Whitaker, will bring a cross section of organisations together under one roof to give information, direction and ideas to older people in Calderdale. Often our interests, needs and requirements change as we get older and knowing what is available is not always obvious or straight forward. A similar event was held in Brighouse in June and was very well-attended by Calderdale residents as well as by local community groups, charities and companies serving the older population. The next fair runs from 10am to 2pm at Todmorden Town Hall, admission is free and we will be there with an information stand - so do come and speak to us if you attend.
EVENTS: Festive Events At The Piece Hall
Halifax’s Piece Hall has released details of many of the Christmas events they are set to host, including concerts, carols, brass-band concerts, films, family events and much more. To view all upcoming events at the venue, including the festive period, visit their website: thepiecehall.co.uk
EVENTS: Brighouse Arts Festival
To celebrate their tenth anniversary, Brighouse Arts Festival have invited back the biggest acts from its history including Kiki Dee & Carmelo Luggeri, Lesley Garrett, Belinda O’Hooley and Roger Davies & His Band. EVENTS: Memory Lane Carers' Party
Memory Lane Cafe is celebrating International Day of Older Persons 2022 with a Carers' Party on 16th October at The Maurice Jagger Centre from 1pm. It will be a celebration of the work and dedication of senior (unpaid) carers who are looking after relatives with dementia. There are around 1700 such carers (65 and over) in Calderdale. HEALTH: West Yorkshire NHS's COVID-19 Autumn Booster Plans
Although the COVID-19 vaccines have made it possible to return to the lives we knew before the pandemic began, the virus is still with us and is still making people very ill. Winter is the season when the threat from COVID-19 is greatest for individuals and communities as viruses spread much more easily, so it is important that everyone eligible tops up their protection with an autumn booster. West Yorkshire NHS have sent us details of their plans for a booster programme this autumn - read it in full on our website
HEALTH: Stop Smoking With Stoptober
Whether you want to start breathing easier, feel the energy boost or even have a little more money to spend, there has never been a better time to stop smoking. HEALTH: New, Free Mental Heath Service in Calderdale
A new mental health service has been launched in our area. Vita Health Group works in partnership with the NHS to provide mental wellbeing services to support local residents in various districts throughout the UK, including Calderdale. Here’s what they have to say about their service: "VitaMinds is a talking therapy service designed to support individuals by providing the tools needed to get things back on track. It’s a free service. We offer a range of short-term psychological therapies to adults 18-years and over, who live and are registered with a GP in Calderdale." On our website we list of the sections of information that are available to help everyone, with lots of information on local services. Calderdale Council’s Customer First Service is now open and operating from Halifax Central, Brighouse and Todmorden Libraries. If you need help with any council service or have a concern you wish to raise, then you can now drop into one of these three Customer First Service points or call and make an appointment to see an adviser. About Calderdale Forum 50 Plus We are a voluntary group that supports and represents people aged 50 and over in Calderdale and highlights information and issues which are useful and important to this age group. We collate guidance on key later life issues such as housing, benefits and finance, care of all kinds and physical and mental health. The Forum is represented on the Council's Ageing Well Alliance Board which aims to develop more age-friendly policies across Calderdale.

The Community Foundation for Calderdale supports charities and voluntary groups across Calderdale, working alongside these groups to address inequalities and create opportunities for those who need them the most.
