Sadly, during the last year of lockdowns, scam calls have risen steeply but one way you can take action to protect yourself is to sign up to a Priority Services Register.  Most utility companies have set them up and Yorkshire Water is leading the way in aiming to get a lot more people aged over 65 to join their register.
