Scams come in many forms and involves uninvited contact by email, letter, telephone or in person. False promises are made to con victims out of money often through doorstep calls to people's homes under the guise of legitimate business or trade.
Sadly, during the last year of lockdowns, scam calls have risen steeply but one way you can take action to protect yourself is to sign up to a Priority Services Register. Most utility companies have set them up and Yorkshire Water is leading the way in aiming to get a lot more people aged over 65 to join their register.

Yorkshire Water’s Priority Services Register is free to sign-up to and supports customers who are worried about scams by enabling you to set up a security password. This means if Yorkshire Water need to contact you, either by telephone or door-to-door you can always check the person’s identity by requesting your password.
Yorkshire Water supply 5 million people in 2.3 million homes – so its reassuring to know if you are on the Priority Services Register, you can also ask for preferential treatment if there is a supply stoppage, flood or other emergency.
