Preparing for the New Rail Yard
The new rail yard is located on 90 acres of Washington Dulles International Airport property and is designed to house over 150 railcars. It will be the largest rail yard in the Metro system.
The rail yard includes five major LEED certified buildings: the Service and Inspection Building, Maintenance of Way Building, Train Wash Facility, Vehicle Storage Facility, and Transportation and Police Building. After 40 railcars were recently transported to the new yard for testing and storage, Metro staff are preparing to test the facilities and train hundreds of employees to make sure the new rail yard is ready to come online!

Countdown to Opening Day
Testing and training along the Silver Line Extension
Metro is working through its punch list – the list of key tasks to be completed before opening day – starting with the first item of business, an official handoff of the keys. Since Metro has taken control of the project, nearly 1,000 locks at the stations, along the tracks, and in the rail yard have been changed out. Check out our pictures from this exciting milestone with Rail Activation Manager Brandon Ruloff and Neil Nott, Metro’s Director of the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project!
