Step Back, Doors Opening

Metro's Extra-ORD-inary News

All aboard! The Silver Bulletin is Metro’s bi-weekly newsletter providing updates about the opening of the Silver Line Extension!

Metro has extra-ORD-inary news to share! Phase 2 of the Silver Line has been under construction with the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) since 2014, and Metro recently declared that the project reached Operational Readiness (ORD).

What does this mean? The Silver Line Extension - which includes six new stations, 11.4 miles of new track, and a new 90-acre rail yard – is now under Metro’s control. Metro must now complete extensive testing and training prior to opening for customers. The exact opening date hasn’t been decided yet, but Metro anticipates that the new Silver Line stations will open during fall 2022.

Countdown to Opening Day

Testing and training along the Silver Line Extension

With the announcement of ORD comes the start of extensive testing and training along the Silver Line Extension to prepare for opening day. Metro will conduct simulated service with trains and buses, emergency responder drills, employee training at stations, on trains, and at the rail yard.
On June 29, 2022, Metro, Fairfax Connector, and Loudoun County Transit buses were at the Silver Line Extension stations to conduct on-site testing. The activities included testing maneuverability in the bus loops, confirming bus bridge routing (used during emergencies or rail service disruptions), and bus bay/stop assignments for all bus providers serving our Silver Line Extension stations.
