The "San Diego Engineers" is the newsletter of the San Diego County Engineering Council (SDCEC), an umbrella organization of engineering societies and educational institutions in San Diego and nearby areas.

Welcome San Diego Engineers, Educators, and Students!

For September, we are super excited to announce our SDCEC partnership with the Fleet Science Center in hosting the first official San Diego Rube Goldberg Machine Contest. The WIST Conference is offering discounts to SDCEC participating organization members. We are also pleased to feature Dr. Bob Klug - an engineering society leader making a difference in San Diego. Bob is the SDCEC Hospitality Chair of the Engineers Week San Diego Banquet and the ASM San Diego Chapter liaison to the SDCEC.

Its all about community and building a local network for engineering society leaders, members and volunteers. So go ahead and help us build that community by sharing this newsletter with your contacts. Have them "Join" the subscription list to receive the "San Diego Engineers" monthly newsletter.

Keep sending me your society events, outreach and news (and photos) by the end of each month and we would be happy to help advertise them.

I look forward to hearing more,

Shukky Sanni, SDCEC Newsletter Editor

Robert (Bob) C. Klug, PhD, PE
SDCEC Hospitality Chair
ASM Communications Chair

I have been and continue to be a dyed-in-the-wool metallurgical engineer. It all started back in Michigan where I worked with my uncle as a machine builder, tool & die machinist and welder.

I did my undergraduate work at  Michigan Tech in upper Michigan because of their strong metallurgy department.  Later received my doctorate at the Colorado School of Mines because of their world-renowned Steel Research Center. I have worked in companies across the United States and traveled the world.

Casting, forging, heat treating, welding and failure analysis has been a phenomenal way to make a living.  The new advanced ceramics, 3D printing as well as the long history of metal workings ties to civilizations rising and falling, mining, recyclability and sustainability all make for astonishing range of interests.  An excitement that I attempt to pass along to my peers and to those new to the field or young folks looking for a career. I do this through the local chapter of  ASM (American Society of Materials), and the national organization of TMS (The Minerals, Metals and  Materials Society. I have always felt that is my professional duty and honor to give to society where I can best make a difference.

That is also why I am involved in the San Diego County Engineering Council (SDCEC). To expand and share your knowledge, understanding, and appreciation; there is no higher calling in my book.

ASM  International is the preeminent association for engaging and connecting materials professionals and their organizations to the resources necessary to solve problems, improve outcomes, and advance society. The ASM San Diego Chapter invites you to join them in their Sept 17th technical meeting (see announcement above).

Bob's spouse, Sharon Klug, can be found volunteering at many of the Engineering Council and Society events with Bob. Here they are crewing on the Maritime Museum  of San Diego, where they also volunteer, historic ship “Star of India” during the 2018 sail.

The SDCEC is the host of the annual Engineers Week San Diego Awards Banquet. You are invited to help us advance our mission in building community among the engineering society chapters locally.
Bob Klug, Hospitality Chair, invites you to join him in the Engineers Week Banquet planning activities. To get more involved, send Bob an email at Hospitality.Chair@SanDiegoEngineers.org. The next banquet planning meeting is September 23, 2019. You can RSVP@SanDiegoEngineers or visit us at www.SanDiegoEngineers.org for more information. Follow us on social media #SanDiegoEngineers.
