The President's Volunteer Service Award

We are in immediate need of a PVSA Chairperson for SEM!

This Chair will review and certify hours for students that submit volunteer hours for the award, and then order the awards to be presented at the Spring SEM awards ceremony. This Chair is in luck! The prior PVSA Chair is still at Townview and willing to train! Total estimate time: 5 hours to review hours outside of work/school and order awards, and then attend the awards ceremony!

Ideal candidate: if your student is likely to apply for the PVSA award, or any parent interested in the program! Most students will submit hours after the calendar year via email to the PVSA Chair.

Contact Michelle Chow, PTSA VP - Programs for details: mhchow@swbell.net or 214-636-6167

American Mathematics Competition Sign Up

SEM will be administering the American Mathematics Competition (AMC) on February 7th, 2019. The AMC 10 and AMC 12 are both 25-question, 75-minute, multiple choice examinations in high school mathematics designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem-solving skills. If you are interested in participating in this competition, please sign up at tinyurl.com/SEMAMC. The deadline to sign up is November 30th.

The AMC is the first in a series of competitions that are used to select students for the US team of the International Mathematics Olympiad. Students who do well on the AMC will be invited to participate in the American Invitational Mathematics Exam (AIME). Some highly selective schools such as MIT have a space on their application for AMC and AIME. These exams give you exposure to advanced math questions and can provide a great place to start learning more math. All SEM students that are interested are encouraged to sign up. Contact Mr. Newton with questions.

Easy Fundraising with AmazonSmile!

What is AmazonSmile and why should I link my Amazon?

AmazonSmile is an easy way to raise money for SEM while you are already making purchases! The AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price from eligible smile.amazon purchases. Millions of products qualify for donations! You will see eligible products marked “Eligible for AmazonSmile donation” on their smile.amazon.com product detail pages. Please note that recurring or subscription renewals are excluded from donations.

Remember, only purchases made through smile.amazon.com (NOT www.amazon.com nor the mobile app) generate AmazonSmile Donations. Make sure you see the “Supporting: PTA Texas Congress 2570 Science & Engineering PTSA” below the search bar!

Easy Fundraising with Kroger Community Rewards Program!

Visit http://www.kroger.com. After creating a login for your Kroger account, sign in and click on “Savings & Rewards” in the main menu bar and select “Kroger Community Rewards” from the drop down menu. Select “I’m a Customer” and enter NY287 in the “Find an Organization” search box. (Please note if searching by school name Science and Engineering Magnet will pull up 2 codes; make sure to use NY287; we are in the process of requesting the duplicate number removed.)

Brand new Kroger card users will need to create an account which requires basic information, email address, and a Rewards card which you can pick up at your local Kroger store!

Remember:

  1. You must register your Kroger card account and link to SEM.
  2. If you don’t have a Kroger card, you can pick one up at any Kroger store!
  3. Purchases will not count until after your card is linked.
  4. And finally, remember to swipe your card at checkout for store savings and to apply for SEM donations!
