The Apostle of Charity

Today, September 27, we celebrate the official feast day of St. Vincent de Paul. St. Vincent de Paul was a French priest during the Seventeenth Century who dedicated his life to serving the vulnerable. He provided food and clothing to the poor, created medical services for the sick, and ministered to those imprisoned. To assist him in his ministry, St. Vincent de Paul founded the Ladies of Charity to extend his efforts. He is often referred to as “the Apostle of Charity” because of his selfless nature.

As Catholics, it is our mission to serve our brothers and sisters in need – we are called to live our lives with the virtues of St. Vincent de Paul. For this reason, $30 million from the Called to Renew Campaign is allocated toward serving the vulnerable across the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. By training lay leaders and hiring more chaplains, we hope to expand our outreach efforts for the Ministry to the Sick and Dying. We will also provide increased support to the Restorative Justice Ministry that works with those who are incarcerated, the victims of violence, and the families of both. Through the gracious generosity of the faithful across our Archdiocese, we are well on our way to achieving these goals. To date, Called to Renew has raised more than $289 million to renew our Catholic community, including our ministry to those most vulnerable.

"Increase our faith and give us confidence"

We are blessed to have so much good news to celebrate this week, please continue to pray for the success of the Campaign. Let us reflect on this excerpt from our Called to Renew prayer:

Father, give us all new excitement to follow Jesus
and to serve You with all our hearts and all our strength.
Increase our faith and give us confidence to offer You
our gifts, our talents and our treasure —
that we might find our true treasure in heaven with You.
