Maintaining Enthusiasm

Strengthen the hands that are feeble, make firm the knees that are weak, say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not! Here is your God, he comes with vindication; with divine recompense he comes to save you.
- Isaiah 35: 1-6

Advent is a season of waiting; an intentional slowing down of life in preparation for the greatest gift to ever come – Jesus Himself. We are not accustomed to slowing down; in fact, we are used to having almost every hour of every day packed with activity. We are used to getting everything we need and want in rapid time. Everything around us praises and encourages such a life of busy-ness. Yet, as the scripture passage above tells us, God calls us to intentionally slow down and to take advantage of this time of waiting to re-learn to be faithful and diligent in the small tasks of life:

- In prayer
- In giving
- In the ordinary, seemingly unimportant tasks of daily life

Being faithful in these small matters helps us to develop the character and to grow the heart that we need to be able to receive God Himself, who comes in those quiet, still, ordinary moments of our lives.

The Campaign has been filled with tons of activity in the past five months, with hundreds of personal visits, receptions, tabling outside of Sunday Masses, or phone-a-thons. Like our lives, it has been a whirlwind of busy-ness. Now that we are winding down to the last round of Commitment Weekends, it can be easy to want to want to jump to the next big thing at our parish without slowing down and remaining faithful to the small, seemingly unimportant Campaign tasks that remain ahead of us.

Learning from our readings this weekend, as we slowdown in Campaign activity and many of us head into our last Commitment Weekend, let us remain steadfast in our effort to bring Campaign enthusiasm to our fellow parishioners. Let us remain steadfast in following best practices for a successful, last Commitment Weekend. Let us step up and help our pastors, business managers, or campaign directors count and process pledge cards if they need help. And finally, let us rejoice and give thanks for the wonderful gift that Called to Renew has been and will be for our parish community in the coming years.

Maintaining Momentum

If you have pending gift requests, consider helping prospective donors reach their decisions. Check in to see if they have any questions and what it may take to receive their decision. Sometimes a simple follow up can make the difference.

Charitable contributions are deductible in the year they are made, so you can also suggest initial payments at the time these gifts are made. That means credit card charges made before the end of the year are deductible even if the bill is not paid until January. The same applies for checks written and mailed by December 31; it does not matter if they are not cashed until 2020.

Even if you are only able to devote a few hours a week to the campaign during Advent, your parish — and fellow parishioners — will enjoy many happy returns.
