Stephanie has overcome so many challenges in her life – a former foster youth that was also once incarcerated, she’s now raising her 7-year-old son with grit and determination. Stephanie and her husband don’t often ask for help, but they were both laid off from their jobs in the wake of COVID-19. Because her husband is undocumented, they are prevented from receiving any relief funds. Without work, and without access to government aid, Stephanie reached out to her son’s Friend, Juan, and requested help. Juan scoured resources and was able to connect them with an organization that provided the family with a $350 gift card for groceries, providing much-needed relief as they navigate this pandemic.
With your support, the Friends L.A. team is connecting our children and families to resources, continuing weekly, virtual one-on-one mentoring with our youth, and providing much needed donations to families to ease their financial burden. This week, we held another Grab & Go distribution with diapers and hygiene supplies from Hello Bello, books from The Emporium: Foster Resource & Literacy Center, water and juice from Topo Chico, and meals from Beyond Meat. Some of our families arrived via ride-share donated by Lyft. Because of you, we've been able to give the following items to our children and families:
- 16,216 individual diapers
- 2,768 hygiene supplies
- 1,300 bottles of water and juice
- 127 children's books
- 100 Beyond Meat hot meals
- 40 days of free ride-sharing via Lyft
