NMHCA Presents to Interim Legislative Health & Human Services Committee

NMHCA Executive Director Jason Espinoza participated on a panel presentation before the interim Legislative Health & Human Services Committee in Silver City, NM, alongside NM Department of Health Secretary Lynn Gallagher and Deputy Director Health Facilities Licensure & Certification Chris Burmeister. Jason focused his remarks on the quality initiatives that NMHCA and our member facilities have embarked on the last several years. He highlighted several quality indicators where New Mexico nursing home facilities perform better than the national average, including lower re-hospitalization rates for both short and long-stay residents, elimination of physical restraint usage, which is at .1% compared to .4 nationally, as well as the 25% decrease in off-label antipsychotic usage in New Mexico facilities since 2012.

National Assisted Living Week: September 9-15

Established by the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) in 1995, National Assisted Living Week® provides a unique opportunity for residents, their loved ones, staff, volunteers, and the surrounding communities to recognize the role of assisted living in caring for America’s seniors and individuals with disabilities. The annual observance encourages assisted living communities around the country to offer a variety of events and activities to celebrate the individuals they serve, as well as to help educate members of the public about this distinct aspect of long-term care. “Capture the Moment” is this year's theme for National Assisted Living Week, which hopes to inspire residents to realize their dreams and seize the day.

You're ready to "Capture the Moment" this National Assisted Living Week (NALW), but how do you share that with others? Check out the NALW Media Toolkit for ideas on how to spread the word about your unique residents, your dedicated staff, your contributions to the larger community, and the special moments you create every day. Download sample materials and find tips at www.nalw.org.

This year, we recommend you invite a local reporter to your big event, send out a press release highlighting your community's unique programs, or send a letter to the editor sharing your AL community's holistic approach to person-centered care.
