An Important Message from Principal Perry
DeBakey HSHP Students and Parents,
I want to let both students and parents know that this is my last school year. I will be leaving my position as principal here at DeBakey HS for Health Professions.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my years in HISD serving as a teacher of social studies and business, curriculum writer, teacher specialist, magnet coordinator, assistant principal, and my current position as principal of DeBakey High School for Health Professions. The process to select a new principal will begin in a few weeks. Over the course of the next few months, you will see full engagement from me with the school.
I want to personally thank each student for your hard work and rising to the challenging DeBakey HSHP curriculum. Each of you are exceptional and the best in HISD. I would like to thank parents for trusting your children with us and supporting DeBakey HSHP program. During my time in HISD, I have worked with some amazing individuals both staff and parents. I can only hope that I have had a positive impact on each student’s growth and development.
We are thrilled to inform you that 2022 is the 50th Anniversary for our beloved school. We want to celebrate this milestone with a celebration that you ALL are invited to attend. DeBakey HSHP will host a 50th Celebration 2-day event, October 28-29, 2022. The festivities will be held at the school's beautiful new building located in the Houston Medical Center as well as the Health Museum in the museum district.
We have created a google form for you to fill out that will help us plan this special event. This form will be collecting information until May 31, 2022. Here is the link to the google form: Link to form

HISD Budget Updates
Thank you for your continued partnership throughout this strategic planning process. My administration is committed to listening and responding to the concerns of the educators and families that are central to everything we do at HISD.
Many of you may have been following the discussions around proposed changes to the district's funding model, and after hearing from the Board of Trustees and many of you, I have asked the leadership team to present a revised funding model that will create a more equitable baseline education for all students AND maintain HISD's commitment to campus-based budgeting that meets the specific needs of each unique student population.
When going from middle school to a prestigious high school like DeBakey, many incoming freshmen and lower classmen students struggle with transitioning to new expectations and academic rigor. This is where the PAL Student Leaders can provide you with support and guidance. The PAL program is a mentoring program for underclassmen students. Once you and your parents agree, you can be paired with an upperclassmen PAL. The upperclassmen PAL can just be there for moral support or they can help navigate through the DeBakey experience. If you student wishes to be placed in the PAL program with a peer upperclassman PAL, please fill out the form below.
Students will be paired with a PAL mentor on a first come first serve basis. After submitting the form below, be on the lookout for an email from us. Parents must also agree to the program for students to join. 😊
The Posse program is a merit-based scholarship focused on leadership. Posse schools are those that are either our state flagship school Texas A & M University, or other highly selective schools in the northeast including Bryn Mawr College (women only), Carleton College, and Colby College. Students that are interested in Posse are encouraged to fill out the interest survey.
The survey link will be emailed be posted Monday, April 11, 2022. Please note that not all students who complete the survey will be nominated for this program.
Mr. Rosa will hold a quick informational meeting Monday, April 11, 2022, at first lunch in the Flex Lab.
Posse seeks students who are...
... Leaders in their high schools and communities
... Committed to their education and demonstrate academic potential
... Interested in teamwork and diversity
... Positive, motivated, talented, ambitious young people
All Nominees Must...
Be high school seniors in the fall of 2022 and have an expected graduation date in the spring of 2023.
Demonstrate extraordinary leadership within their high school, community and/or family.
Excel academically and have strong GPAs. Although there is no minimum requirement, only nominees who have consistently progressed toward academic excellence will be given the opportunity to be a Posse Scholar. While the ACT or SAT are not a focus of Posse’s evaluation, students should take them.
Be open to making an early decision commitment to a Posse partner institution if selected as a finalist. Early decision is a binding commitment and great option for students who are excited about attending one institution.
