Time is ticking and school is right around the corner! While this year continues to look a little different, we still have many things that we are both excited and thankful for. There will be a new level of learning for everyone this year - teachers, students, parents and all of our support staff. While we will do our absolute best to prepare to the best of our ability, we also understand that the first few days of school will be filled with questions, technological obstacles and perhaps even a little bit of frustration! As a team of directors, we have focused on developing a learning experience that is mindful of the challenges online learning can present as well as mindful of our students extra-curricular commitments and additional academic coursework.

To get things started, we wanted to make sure that our band family had the most recent information regarding the districts new learning platform, Schoology. Please take a moment to read through the information below as well as utilize the training resources available. While these resources may not answer ALL of your questions, it can help get us #movingforward.

Band students will practice utilizing a variety of Schoology tools through a series of simple assignments during the first week of school. This will help get band students familiar with the learning system and allow them the opportunity to ask Directors questions. Additionally, students will continue to utilize the online digital platform - "SmartMusic" in which all students should have registered an account for previously. Should a student still need to create a SmartMusic account, we will provide that information during the first few weeks. Band staff will also utilize a series of musical websites and apps, all of which will be free to our students. Links to these resources will be accessible through Schoology. All items that are currently available on the 2020 Hays Band Google Classroom will also be transferred over to the new Schoology learning system. This will help create a one-stop learning hub for our students!

For band students to be successful through Schoology, students should be working to secure access to a digital device and making sure that they have access to an instrument and or drum pad (percussion only). All guard members should have access to their equipment as well. Given the certain circumstances of band, we are encouraging, but in no way requiring students to invest in a higher quality external microphone to assist with audio balance issues while performing on their instruments.

In addition to the details provided above, we are encouraging our students and their families to develop an "at-home' learning studio in which students have the opportunity to be comfortable and as free of distraction as possible. This learning studio should also take in account that students may be expected to play their instrument so sound proofing and space may be of consideration.

Again, we can't thank you enough for your adaptability and dedication towards ensuring academic and musical excellence in our Hays Band students! This year will take tremendous teamwork and we look forward to working together to make this year memorable.

What is Schoology?
Schoology is an integrated learning management solution that provides course management, mobile learning, and support for system-wide communication. Schoology enables our students, parents, and teachers to engage with learning materials and their school community from the classroom and beyond. In addition, students can digitally submit homework assignments, review grades, participate in interactive discussions, receive announcements and feedback, take tests, write academic blogs, and more. This platform helps students stay organized, and it keeps the class connected and aligned. Student progress and activity will be monitored by faculty to ensure a safe, secure, and controlled environment.

How do Parents connect to Schoology?
As a parent, you will be able to view your child’s activity within the platform with your own login.
A Schoology Parent Account gives you access to:

  • The classes in which your child is enrolled
  • Your child’s upcoming assignments
  • School and class announcements

Parents that have registered their child through TEAMS , will receive an email with their Schoology access information once classes have been finalized.

Through your parent Schoology account, you will be able to see your child's class assignments, daily grades, and course calendars. You will not be able to participate in classroom activities. For more in-depth guidance on specific Schoology features, check out our Help Center at

How do I help my child navigate Schoology?
Preparing your child or children to work in Schoology will be similar to working in Google Classroom except Schoology offers so much more. We have created a Student Resources page to help you and your child understand how to navigate Schoology. It provides you with videos and resource guides to help you with your child's courses, teacher feedback, and communication tools.
