NSF and NASA funding awarded for KBS research

The Litchman and Klausmeier Labs will be busy thanks in part to a three-year, $993,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to investigate and to predict intraspecific trait variation in phytoplankton, as well as a two-year, $360,000 National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) grant to fund research on modeling the evolutionary origin of diverse microbial metabolisms.

At KBS, volunteers make a difference

This time of year we have so much to be thankful for, including the amazing volunteers who share their time and talents across KBS. Last month we gathered to honor 182 volunteers at the 29th Annual KBS Volunteer Recognition Dinner. During the past year, these volunteers have shared over 6,500 hours leading tour groups, assisting in labs, photographing events, toiling in the gardens, and the list goes on. Interested in becoming a KBS Volunteer? See a complete list of opportunities on the KBS Volunteer webpage.

Using drones in sustainable agriculture research

KBS's Long-term Ecological Research (LTER) site provides science-based information to help make farming both profitable and good for the environment. Research Technician, Kevin Kahmark, collects data using drones equipped with specialized scientific instruments that will study factors in helping farmers best manage their crops over the growing season.

Information gained during flights is an improvement over data that has been collected from satellite measurements and has a higher resolution than the data collected through the use of airplanes similarly equipped.

Watch a video of the drone in action on the KBS YouTube Channel and read more about the drone technology on the LTER website.
