August has been an opportunity for educators to unplug, decompress and recalibrate ahead of the 2020-21 academic year. The month seems to have flown by for everyone. Summer 2020 was the first in 18 years where I have been at home, not had time off and not left the country which has taken some getting used to! We were due to go to Rwanda and Uganda for our second Action Aid women in education project, but it has been deferred to next summer instead. Fingers crossed things will have settled by then!

So, what I have been up to? I have enjoyed getting home to North Devon to see the family, going for walks on the beach, doing some gardening and catching up with friends in small groups. My work time has been spent on working with Blue Hall, my brand designer, and Richard Robinson, my web developer, on the Diverse Educators website which went live on September 1st. Please do check it out and share it with your networks.

Reflections on the Last Month

Some of the highlights for me this month:

Being asked to speak at the launch event for Mindful Equity on the theme of resilience. I pledged to share my mic, so I invited Deepa Vasudevan, a SCITT lead and Umarah Abid, who has just finished her teacher training year to join me. You can watch the event.

Supporting Sophie Christophy and the Phoenix Education Trust with the Freedom 2 Learn Festival by hosting a panel on Diversity in Education which you can watch here.

Delivering #IamRemarkable workshops always brings me joy and I was delighted to find out I am one of the top 100 facilitators, globally!

I joined Nick McKie on his podcast ‘PersYou’, along with Angie Browne. You can listen on the PersYou website or on Apple Podcasts

As I come near to completing my coaching accreditation with Resilient Leaders Elements, I have been reflecting on Leadership Presence which is one of the elements underpinning the facets of authenticity, service and intentionality.

At the end of August I launched the legacy writing project for the #DailyWritingChallenge - the #MonthlyWritingChallenge. Join us at the end of each month to explore a theme. September’s theme is: 'Journeys'.

I was interviewed earlier in the month by Virginia Mendez, the CEO of The Feminist Shop.

At the end of July I was invited to contribute to a regional community event on Black Lives Matters in Education, chaired by Fola Komolafe who hosts a series of conversations called: ‘On The Couch With Fols’. She asked each speaker to do a follow up interview with her.

I am excited to be working with Diana Osagie on her new endeavour: The Academy for Women’s Leadership which launches at the start of October. I have developed and will be delivering some of the modules, I will also be coaching some of the participants. The first cohort is full but there are spaces to join us in January 2021.
