Consider it pure joy….whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.
James 1:2 NIV
It’s easy to get discouraged. We can work our hardest, try our best, and still not see the result we’re hoping for. It’s been said that “The moment you’re ready to quit is usually the moment right before the miracle happens. Don’t give up” (source unknown). A memory of mine confirms the truth of that observation:
One Saturday afternoon, when our children were still living at home, our daughter Rachel was cleaning her beta fish bowl in our kitchen. Her shriek brought me running.
“I was trying to get my fish out of the bowl and accidentally dropped him down the garbage disposal!”  Her eyes filled with tears.
“Was it turned on?”
She looked at me in disgust.
I did what any good mother would do - I yelled for her older sister. Lauren owned a beta too and had experience with mishaps.
Lauren reached in. “I feel it,” she said.
David, my husband, joined us. “You get it!” Lauren told him. “Run the water so it doesn’t dry out,” I contributed. He reached in, but his large hand got caught mid-extraction.
Lauren tried again.  She could no longer feel the fish. “Oh well, you can get another one,” she shrugged.
Those were not words of comfort to Rachel.
“Keep trying,” I said.
After what must have seemed an eternity in fish years, Lauren pulled the bedraggled beta from the disposal and plopped it in a waiting water bowl. The fish survived, a bit stunned, but long term, none the worse for wear.
When things seem hopeless Father, remind me not to give up.
1. Have I ever given up and later regretted it? What might have happened if I'd stuck with it?
2. Is there anything in my life right now that I'm tempted to abandon? Should I ask God for strength to continue?
