Core Basics of Remote Teaching + Support

Hello Everyone!

This has been an extraordinary week in terms of everyone’s good will, creative ideas, and practical tips for supporting students to complete the winter semester at this strange global time. Thank you for everything you are doing!

Here is some final countdown advice as we move to fully remote teaching (no faculty or students on campus) Monday, March 23. The full Hub team will be remote supporting you all week long!

Core Basics of Remote Teaching (Keeping it Simple)


  • Establish a communication channel with your students - Moodle Announcements, email, Zoom, phone, etc.
  • Invite students to let you know if they have problems accessing technology and encourage them to connect with your Program Coordinator and Student Success Advisor; we will not be failing students for lack of access
  • Let them know your plan for teaching, sharing content, and remaining assessments until the end of the winter semester (use the Academic Continuity Syllabus Template shared by your Chair or Dean)
  • Encourage them to message each other through Moodle to form study groups and support each other


  • Focus on content and assessments that support the learning outcomes you have not yet covered
  • If you’re using a textbook, remind students which sections to read and practice
  • Use Moodle Announcements or email to share new content (PPTs, readings, practice problems, links to relevant and accurate videos or other supplemental resources)
  • Confirm the most important items for each week

Activities, Practice & Assessment

  • If you can, add formative (ungraded) practice options in Moodle
  • Consider reflection questions for each content type that reinforce the key points
  • Keeping to your established or revised assessment plan, build assessments using Moodle tools
  • If students are submitting files to you that you will be evaluating, consider using the Moodle Assignment activity to ensure you and your students retain an accurate record of what was submitted and for ease of grading
