The Doctor is in!
Two years ago, in March 2018, a medical team traveled to Jeannette. That group worked for three days and saw over three hundred patients.
Just last month, a medical team returned from Jeannette. Our providers worked for three and a half days. One hundred and fifty patients were seen; half the number of people seen just two years ago. This is a very good sign that Doctor Elie’s presence in the community has had a positive effect on the health of Jeannette and the surrounding area. Dr. Elie St. Martin, who currently provides care in the clinic 10 days per month, says he is pleased to finally be at a place where he is managing health care for the people of the area, not just taking care of urgent needs (though he is happy to be able to do that too).
The visiting team was not just there to deliver supplies, equipment and medication, but also to offer support and share ideas. Members of the Haiti Project Health Committee met with the full clinic staff and Père Moïse to discuss their vision for the next 3-5 years. The number one wish for the staff is to have a better functioning on-site laboratory. Currently, patients in Jeannette need to travel to Miragoane by motorcycle (a thirty minute ride) to have even the most basic testing done. Other needs identified are for regular dental and eye care in the village. The staff has a long range dream of a hospital in Jeannette to serve the surrounding villages. The clinic currently serves more than seven area villages: Jeannette, Desmareaux, Desmarais, Petit Berquin, Grand Berquin, Corail, Masson and Bas.
