A Change Jar for the Digital Era
Who remembers the feeling of buying a coffee, receiving a handful of coins from the cashier, and dumping those coins into a jar on the counter to support a local charity? It was a convenient way to give back and start your day on a charitable note, but in the days of COVID and cashless payments these convenient change jars are mostly nonexistent... Until now.

Thanks to our new partnership with Change Donations, you can now give spare change to Puente with every credit/debit card purchase. Simply sign-up through this
link, select Puente as your charity of choice (we're in the "Community Services" category), and the system will do the rest. Here's how it works:
  • Change Donations links to your payment cards and bank accounts via secure integrations with Plaid (owned by Visa)
  • Whenever you use your card to make a purchase (online or in-store), Change Donations will round the transaction up to the nearest dollar and give the "spare change" to Puente
    • For example: if you buy a coffee for $2.85, $0.15 will automatically be donated to Puente
  • These tiny transactions add up to a meaningful total over time:
    • The average user donates $30 per month through spare change round-ups
    • Over the course of a full year, these donations equate to $360 on average -- which is roughly the cost of one Puente Potty!
Change Donations is founded by fellow ND '15 graduate Mattie Conaghan, and we're honored to be one of their first nonprofit partners. Please consider signing up for this game-changing service, and let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Executive Summary
  • WaSH Training Program Launched: Puente WaSH Director Tiven Buggy has launched a new training program to share his subject matter expertise with our volunteers in the DR. Five of our most motivated volunteers are undergoing a 4-week educational program to learn what it takes to accomplish larger-scale WaSH initiatives in underserved communities.
  • More Volunteer Training: in addition to Tiven's new WaSH program, standout volunteer Yina Alvarez is now leading a new Community Development Training Program for six volunteers in Constanza. Yina took this course herself last year, and is now stepping up to share her knowledge with others.
  • New Partnerships in Africa and Guatemala: our new-and-improved mobile app is helping more organizations harness the power of data to expand their impact. Our newest partners are taking Puente's app into Africa and Guatemala, where they will use it to identify WaSH and healthcare needs in underserved communities.

New Training Programs Underway

Since day one, Puente has been training Dominican volunteers to become community development advocates in their home cities. Our volunteers have accomplished so much in the past few years, and we're thrilled to announce that their opportunities to create impact with Puente are now expanding.

WaSH Director Tiven Buggy recently launched a new training program focused specifically on Water access, Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH) projects. This 4-week course teaches volunteers how to assess WaSH needs across a community and design solutions to meet the needs of residents. We expect graduates from this program to take an active role in not only surveying communities, but designing larger-scale WaSH projects, testing water quality, helping residents understand the importance of hygiene, monitoring the effectiveness of projects, and more. Our first WaSH program includes five incredibly motivated volunteers who are excited to work closely with Tiven on WaSH projects across the Constanza region.

Additionally, our core Community Development Training Program is back underway with a new instructor. Standout volunteer Yina Alvarez took this course last year, and is now sharing her knowledge with six new volunteers who are eager to mimic Yina's impact across the region.

All-in-all, we're now offering three distinct training programs for volunteers with different interests and skillsets:
  1. Our core Community Development Training Program gives volunteers a foundation of knowledge that applies across all areas of development and equips them to become effective surveyors, liasons, and community leaders
  2. Our Health Promoters Program gives volunteers with a medical background the ability to focus specifically on solving healthcare challenges in their communities
  3. Our new WaSH Program provides a similarly specialized path for volunteers with a passion for engineering and environmental matters.
Empowering locals is the best way to create sustainable impact, so we're proud to be providing more educational curriculum to more motivated volunteers!

New Partnerships in Africa & Guatemala

Puente's Data Collection App gives nonprofits the ability to identify more people in need, plan projects more efficiently, and monitor the impact of prior initiatives. All-in-all, it's a great piece of technology that helps partner NGOs increase their impact by harnessing the power of data.

We're thrilled to announce that two new partner organizations are now using Puente's app to ignite change in areas with significant unmet needs:
  • Ryan's Well has helped over a million people gain access to clean drinking water. They are now using Puente's app across Africa to identify more families and communities that could benefit from a Ryan's Well project!
  • Mayanza is on a mission to improve the health of school children in Guatemala through health screenings and education. Our app is helping them better quantify the issues faced by these children, so they can design the most impactful programs and interventions
Our app is now being used by seven amazing nonprofits working in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Guatemala, Mexico, and several African countries. We're thrilled to help these organizations make a greater difference across the globe through the power of data and technology.
