New Programming and a Growing Volunteer Network

WASH Programming: Our WASH Director, Tiven Buggy, has officially completed training Puente's first cohort of WASH volunteers. The course is available to all motivated Puente volunteers that have at least 6 months of experience working with Puente. Professor Tiven pushed participants to learn microbiology, water quality sampling and testing, monitoring and evaluation of WASH initiatives, etc. We are thrilled to take our volunteer program to new heights and we couldn't have a better professor leading the way!

New Sustainable Community Development Cohort: Our Community Coordinator, Yinetza Alvarez worked closely with Crismary Gutierrez to train 6 new volunteers. Training took place over the last 2 months and our new volunteers are already making an impact within their home communities. To date, we have trained over 40 individuals on sustainable community development. We love bringing on new team members, especially when they are motivated to drive lasting change!
New Communities, New Projects and More Community Engagement!

Water Filter Distribution: Since beginning our Water Filter Program nearly 2 years ago, our volunteer network has distributed 301 filters to communities throughout Constanza. Over 1,100 people now have constant access to clean drinking water. Our monitoring and evaluation data collection has showed us that 90% of recipients report saving $2 USD/ week; 92% have reported that their filter is in excellent condition; and 89% have demonstrated proper cleaning technique and frequency. Our WASH team will continue to conduct water quality tests to ensure all beneficiaries are properly maintaining their filter!

Water Access Projects:
  • Cruz de Cuaba: We are extremely excited to announce that we have received project approval to address Cruz de Cuaba's water access situation. Thanks to your donations and support from Friends of the DR, we will be providing 35 households and 1 elementary school with daily access to running water. A total of 104 residents will ultimately benefit from improving their current infrastructure and distribution.
  • Los Embassadores and La Luisa: Our WASH volunteers have conducted 3-month (post-project) monitoring and evaluation for the 17 Puente Potties we constructed back in December. Results show us that 25% of recipients do not have enough water to properly use their sanitation facility. Further data collection has confirmed that water access is an ongoing issue for 300+ residents in the area. Our volunteers that live within the community have formed a water committee and we are working with local stakeholders to find an appropriate solution!
  • Barrio Puerto Rico: Data collection efforts show us that 30% of residents receive water 1x per week or even less and 82% of all residents spent at least 30 minutes per day retrieving water. Residents have formed a water committee and we are determined to help provide these amazing residents with more reliable water access!
Puente Potties: Working with our partners TECHO-DR, we are preparing to implement 11 bathrooms in Santiago. TECHO and Puente volunteers have been collaborating for months now in order to meet the sanitation needs of the amazing residents of Nuevo Almanecer!
