WEBINAR

ENGAGING RESIDENTS IN VOLUNTARY SERVICES

The biggest challenge that most providers express about working with a voluntary services model is engaging tenants in non-mandatory services. In this session, attendees will learn about tips and strategies to develop relationships between tenants and supportive service providers through a cultural competency framework. This session will define how to use an assertive engagement approach and will also provide a space for attendees to share observations and examples from their work.

Supportive housing providers in Illinois serve some of the people at the greatest risk of dying from a drug overdose. People experiencing homelessness, people returning from incarceration, people exiting substance use disorder treatment, and people with chronic health problems like asthma or HIV are all more likely to experience an overdose death. One of the most important steps that someone can take to prevent an overdose death is carrying naloxone and teaching the people around them how to use it in the event of an opioid overdose. Supportive housing providers are uniquely positioned to link their participants with this life-saving resource.

The attached document provides contact information for programs that are funded by the Illinois Department of Human Services, Division of Substance Use Prevention and Recovery (IDHS/SUPR) to provide Overdose Education and Naloxone Distribution (OEND) services. Collectively, these programs ensure that OEND services are available in every county in Illinois. The programs can help establish access to naloxone for your supportive housing participants and staff. Please reach out to the OEND programs for the counties you serve to learn more about what your supportive housing program can do to prevent overdose deaths.

For more information, you can view this webinar, “What’s Your Agency’s Overdose Plan?”, which was presented as part of the CSH Addiction Services 101 webinar series.
