I receive many calls from members of the public requiring notarial services as commerce never stops but it has certainly been delayed. I am sure that each of you has had your own problems to deal with. As Notaries we must maintain high standards and be ever vigilant for suspicious documents. Always insist on proof of identity, no matter what. I always require to sight the original passport and driver licence of the person appearing before me and I may go further and ask for a utilities bill to show residential address. You must check the expiry date of passports for sometimes they have expired. Also, in New Zealand, you are required to sign the passport on the main page and many passports are unsigned so insist on the person appearing before you signing the passport in your presence and compare the signature.
Recently we had a Board meeting by Zoom and it went very well. I was sitting at my desk in Auckland, New Zealand, at 8.00am, Leo Mangan and Brian O’Brien were zooming in from their respective homes in Dublin at 9.00pm, Anthony Northey and Andrew Johnson were at their homes in England at 9.00pm, and Ken Sherk was in his office in Vancouver at 1.00pm, with our secretary, Tracey Merlini, at her home in Auckland at 8.00am. The technology worked and we covered many topics including updating the website and importantly future membership of C.L.A.N.
I hope you enjoy reading the latest issue of Notary World and I wish you and your families all the very best. Please keep well and stay safe.
