Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day – March 2021

Mar 15, 2021 12:00 am

Welcome to Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day for March 2021.

Here in my USDA Hardiness Zone 6a garden in central Indiana, the first daffodils are blooming. This particular one is ‘Tete de Tete’, a reliable, early blooming miniature daffodil. It isn’t much more than four inches tall, if that.

But before there were daffodils, there were little irises.

This one is Iris histrioides ‘Lady Beatrix Stanley’, sometimes referred to as Iris reticulata. I have a lot of unnamed varieties of reticulated irises blooming in the front garden.

But before the irises bloomed, there were crocuses! Lots of them in the lawn in back and more in the front flower beds.

They tend to bloom in waves, with these darker crocuses leading the way in the second wave.

The first wave, which started on February 25 was like this in just a few days time.

Most of the lawn and flower bed crocuses are varieties of Crocus tommasinianus. (Did I spell that right? Most gardeners just refer to them as “tommies”.)

I do have some named varieties of crocus, including ‘Pickwick’, a favorite striped flower.

I’ve been out working in the garden this past few weeks and have already planted several flats of violas and pansies in containers, plus snapdragons and alyssum at the ends of the raised beds in the vegetable garden.

This planter will fill in nicely and be ready for a big Easter display!

What else is blooming? How about snowdrops, hellebores, winter aconites, and a little tiny Scilla.

In other words, spring is arriving right on schedule!

What’s blooming in your garden on the 15th of the month. Join us for Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day and show us. It’s easy to participate. Just post on your blog about your blooms, then leave a comment below and a link in the Mr. Linky widget and we’ll come check it out!
