Message from Tom
It’s been a slog, but we’re there; 9 Limefield is occupied and already being much loved and used for God’s glory in Oakham (a massive thankyou to everybody for all they did and particularly Merv, Jon D and Team Dodson for moving all those boxes with us). There was quite a delay Wednesday, on moving day, when we were all sat in the garage on Trent Road waiting for the necessary things to move with the solicitors and we began to talk about contingency plans. Where will we sleep if we don’t get the keys? What will we do with vans full of stuff? We know God is faithful and His timings are perfect, but He also calls us to be wise stewards and to plan as we can so as not to be foolish. God calls us total trust and also shrewd stewardship. I know there are some keen sailors among our ranks, and they will no doubt tell me about the incorrectness of this illustration, but I’m feeling nautical… The Christian life is often a navigation through a tricky straight. If we steer one way we risk running aground on the shallow depth on mistrust, and yet over correct and we could hit the reef of foolhardiness. On a clear day we can just about make the voyage between the hazards, sometimes we can even see the wrecks that have strayed before us and learn from their wayward activities. But more often than we’d like, the day can be foggy and visibility low. Not only that but we are the navigators; untrained, prone to panic and all together unsuitable for such a colossal task as life.

I used to love Hornblower when I were younger, for those not in the know, it’s about a naval commander around the Napoleonic period. One of the scenes that reoccurred in almost every episode was a lurching galleon, wood creaking, trying to sail quietly and decisively through a narrow and hazardous straight. Whenever this event occurred it was never a task left to the navigator alone; each member of the crew had a role to play whether is was dropping lines to measure depth, maneuvering cargo to change the ship’s ballast, reading maps before and during the trip or stood behind the navigator offering encouragement and advise. It was an “all hands” affair.
So too we aren’t called to navigate our own straights alone, here upon the HMS OBC (the ex-Airman inside me resented typing that) every member has dedicated their lives to dropping lines, encouraging, moving cargo and reading maps as we navigate God’s seas together. Advise, council and wise listening will always help us avoid running aground as we sail through life. And the wonderful thing is this… if we do hit a rock, God has already patched the hole up, we just might have to bail out some water, but before you know it we can be sea worthy yet again and sailing into new waters.

Have a blessed week and know I’m always available to chat; just drop me an email, give me a call or pop into church.
