Powering CUs in Sierra Leone

Thanks to a co-funded project between the Foundation, Savvi Credit Union and Electric Aid*, we are supporting four of the fastest growing rural credit unions to have access to electricity and use a computer to run credit union reports. The funding received from Electric Aid allowed for the purchase, delivery and installation of generators and solar panels. The generators and solar panels play a vital role in mitigating the constraints on CU operations caused by Sierra Leone’s limited electricity supply as they allow for CU offices to be clearly lit for its members to safely do their business and to run computer equipment. It is noteworthy that still today many of the areas serviced by FIRSL supported CUs have no access to electricity and it remains a serious challenge for Sierra Leone. These assets will allow them to also now experience the considerable benefits these assets have been proven to bring to earlier recipients and will enable them to harness technology to help manage their growth in a more structured and sustainable manner.

These key assets will be kept on the ILCUF Ltd. Fixed Asset Register in Freetown and Asset Use Agreements have been put in place with the participating CUs.

*Electric Aid is the ESB and EirGrid staff's social justice and development fund.
